Ufff! Some heavy stuff from finger boy over the radio.
A sign of Bernie taking his foot off the power pedal before handover, just to show how awesome he is.

Except Vettel was behind him and wasn’t even level when the lock up happened. There was no overtake by Vettel.

And as for backing him up well that was a sensible tactic with his team mate bearing down on the Ferrari.

Less happy that there has been a lot of politics and spin on the activities on the track. Much as I think Herbert is a twerp, I agree that we should let the guys race. Vettels needs to curb his language, but let them race.

MaxV’s team advised him to give the place up. They knew.

What we were deprived of was Max maybe letting DannyR through too to have a good clean scrap between SebV and DannyR in the last couple of laps.
That would have been good. Although Ricarrdo’s attempted pass and Vettel giving him just enough room not to crash even after Ricarrdo had locked up – superb.

because he cut the corner thereby staying ahead had the corners been the other way he would have been overtaken hence he gained an [unfair] advantage going off track and was rightly penalised for this.

after that he was just a bit shitty and ungentlemanly as his team informed him to give up the place and it ended up costing him another place as well as being kicked of a podium he should never have been on

Vettel has got a 10 second penalty for his driving when Ricciardo went to overtake.

    That surprises me.

It looked like, Verstappen went outside so Vettel went inside, which seemed reasonable, and Ricardo made a long distance attempt on the inside that was never going to work.

It also seems a bit off that Verstappen having committed the offence that demoted him, then backed Vettel up. A clear advantage to the team from Verstappen’s misdemeanour.

Wonder if the real offence was annoying Charlie?

Disappointed to wake up and discover vettel hasn’t been given a race ban yet. Name calling and telling the race director to f@#$ off is unsportsmanlike. Would be on a warning or dismissal with many employers I would imagine.

Nail on the head! 😆 the body language in the post race room said it all “Enjoy it while you can sonny, it ain’t gonna last!”

Vettel was one of the drivers who helped bring in the ‘Verstappen rule’ so him pulling a Verstappen on Ricciardo could not go unpunished.

Totally agree with the need for gravel traps in F1 and motogp.

Yet. There’s still some action to be taken against the German. The penalty was only for clattering Ricciardo.

Why did Hamilton not get a penalty for his first lap missing of two corners?

    nickjb

He only gained a time gap rather than track position and that gap was negated by the safety car moments later. All of the first three had issues on that corner so it would have been hard to work out. The safety car was a lucky break for the officials

    tjagain

Don’t matter tho does it. If he hadn’t done that but had cut back to the track earlier he would have been passed – and exceeding track limits gets you a penalty normally

Not if you haven’t gained an advantage from the act. What part of this are you struggling with? This or Lewis’s awesomeness? 😉

Why did Hamilton not get a penalty for his first lap missing of two corners?

That’s been answered, but we can do it again if you want. The stewards tend to be more lenient in the first couple of laps and any advantage would have been wiped out by the virtual safety car. So no point penalising him.
Rosberg was also pushed off the track and no penalty.
Verstappen was in a podium place and fighting at the finish.
    Slightly different scenarios imo.

Hamilton missed two corners and went outside the marker for track limits. clear breach of the rules and clearly gained an advantage by doing so. Later on in the race we saw someone else ( forget who) make the same mistake but came back onto the track in the right place and lost a place as a result. No doubt at all Hamiltion gained an advantage by cutting not one but two corners

Are you deliberately ignoring the part where the safety car effectively did the officials job for them?

I think Lewis got lucky with that move, as to be fair if there had been a fence or gravel trap he wouldn’t have got away with it. But hey, he’s been doing this for a long time now and knew he’d probably get away with it, so alls fair. Otherwise he’d have made a better attempt at braking and defending his lead.

Regardless of the ins and outs of it all, can’t help but laugh at Vettel getting done for doing a Max, and Verstappens comment along the lines of ‘at least I can do it properly’.

    slowoldman

Hmm, I can’t see anything wrong with Vettel’s defence against Ricciardo to be honest. I think they gave him a slap for his comments – and I expect further sanctions there, though most likely a fine.

    igm

Slowoldman – I think if you look at Vettel and Ricardo only then maybe there’s an issue, but Vettel has to be allowed to avoid Verstappen who has gone to the outside so it seems fair if agree.

You’re clearly right and the highly experienced stewards under the spotlight of arm chair fans are wrong. Happy?

F1 race director Charlie Whiting and the race stewards were comfortable that Hamilton had not gained a ‘lasting advantage’ from the incident.

Indeed, the fact that Hamilton backed off, as was proven by telemetry readings that they saw, meant there was no doubt the Briton did not deserve a punishment.

In Verstappen’s case, the stewards decided that the Dutchman had only been able to retain his position by driving across the grass and rejoining the track – which is why he was given the five-second penalty that cost him a podium.[/url]

If Hamilton got a reprimand for reversing 2 foot in the pit lane because he wasn’t told where to stop I’m amazed there’s been nothing further done about finga boys potty mouthed outbursts.

In this age of technology perhaps they could implement a system where if they exceed track limits by a full car width they automatically lose electrical charge stored? That way they can make their own decisions and they would then deal their own punishments, ultimately it might become part of tactics, but I would imagine it would restrict over zealous, over ambitious moves. Obviously there would have to be consideration made for how another car might be influencing the situation …… another can of worms?

So lap one of the race take the Strava line through the first corner and ignore any track limits.

Or proper old school gravel traps. You know, the ones that caused cars to roll now and then.

For all those slating Vettel as a sore loser etc. How about next time Ferrari find one of their drivers out of contention for points, say a puncture or mechanical problem. They sort the problem out and send the driver back out and allow him to cause all manner of problems for other teams cars. Say a snide impact with a red bull vying for 1st. Say slowing down the red bull driver enough that the other Ferrari can catch him.

Complete can of worms would be opened if they didn’t penalise the red bull. Verstappen should be left alone with vettel to sort their differences. He looked like a sneaky little turd while they waited for the podium. Wasn’t me, blah blah blah. Told Vettel was on his way and skulked off.

Its not just the implications of the action. Its the implications of the motivations behind the action. It was sneaky

Then slow down to make sure you don’t get a lasting advantage from taking the strava line. Like it says up there ^

The advantage wasn’t the resulting gap, it was not having to actually defend turn one.

So how come the stewards can come to a conclusion on Verstappen but Vettel’s comes out later, allowing Ferrari to take all the podium publicity? If there is a doubt about a podium placing surely the ceremony should be delayed. Shambles.

Well Bernie wants to bring back walls to stop these antics.

TheLittlestHobo in your example the 2nd Ferrari wouldn’t be fighting for position and hence, told to move over. Mind it has happened before where back markers have held up faster cars or Renaults have hit walls 😆 Common sense to use a few ‘dark arts’ when even 1 second can make a difference to the outcome. Just don’t get caught.

But “team tactics” are allowed again now aren’t they? Was it only me who thought of Massa’s days at Ferrari when he let Bottas go and them held up Perez?

I bet the other drivers are thinking about getting together and organising a “Let’s Bait Seb” approach to racing whenever he’s nearby…

First one to get him to swear on the radio gets an extra point. 😀

Audi has ditched Le Mans and the WEC for Formula E

I missed this, not F1 but very interesting. I really hope Formula E takes off as F1 is getting a bit of a bore, unless Ross Brawn can turn it around.
