Pillaged it mainly, but that was a very long time ago.

Vikings may have taken York by force, however assimilation led to York becoming an important trading post.

I am not sure the Vikings would appreciate being called continental Europeans.

I don’t think the Vikings would have cared about the context or connotations of being called continental Europeans

    Listened to that – depressing.

I know he said he was 35 but he sounded about 19. I too however would not trust the uk populous not to vote brexit again given the chance even though they now have concrete evidence that wierdly having your cake and eating it turns out to not be as easy as Bozza would have you believe the first time around.

The Roman’s who founded York I’m sure would be down with being called continental Europeans.

The Italians did it first. Although to be fair, I don’t think they pillaged it. 🙂

It was capital of the future EU Roman Empire for a wee while – if you regard the base of the emperor as the capital.

Anyone else think that Junker looked and sounded like he had been on the sherry from the BBC news clip with T-may, last night?

Plus the old boy was ruffling that blond woman’s hair in an over familiar sort of way…. Awkward.

”What have continental Europeans ever done for York??”

Brought huge amounts of cash into the city? Big euro-tourist town. Also hen nights – but they’re mainly Geordie.

given that the vikings were influential from the Caspian to Northern England, I don’t think they’ve have minded to be honest.

given that the vikings were influential from the Caspian to Northern England,

The vikings who rebranded to be normans were quite fond of the idea of a united Europe.

Typical EU behaviour, will be much better when we are out of it and can go back to restrained non emotional interactions.

From other clips I’ve seen of him, he probably had.

Well known drunk, he’s hardly the first – or even first politician – to be so, and won’t be the last.

If I had to deal with a confused and inept British Prime Minister asking the impossible, I’d be on the booze too!

You know what really knarked me about that? It made ****-all difference, she already knew from the whips that she was going to win but not by enough to come out of it looking good, and still decided to bring those 2 back. Just rancid.

Despairing at some of the gammony comments on BBC – apparently we won’t need to import our own food, we’ll grow our own despite the fact that we import 80% of our food and we need numbers of migrant labour to pick and process it because our feckless natives can’t be arsed doing it. Looking forward to rotten cabbage, potato and onion soup already.

A bit, gets results though. I was at friends last night and one of them (in dark glasses) sang us his modified version of the Marseillaise, but he sings flat so roped a couple of us into doing it for Youtube for him, I’m on guitar… . He printed a couple of hundred copies for the local manif today with the intention of getting everyone to sing, no news of how it went yet.

Edit: well he made the local press including his lyrics if you flick through the images.

To a surrounded enemy, you must leave a way of escape. – The Art of War

Theresa May has attacked one of her predecessors – accusing Tony Blair of “undermining” the Brexit talks by calling for another referendum.

She called his comments an “insult to the office he once held” and said MPs could not “abdicate responsibility” to deliver Brexit by holding a new poll.

In London last week, Mr Blair said MPs might back a new vote if “none of the other options work”.

Labour MPs who back the idea have met cabinet minister David Lidington.

On Thursday about 10 MPs met Mr Lidington, who is Mrs May’s de facto second-in-command, to argue for another public vote and make it clear there was no other government plan they could support.

But many senior Labour figures are deeply uneasy about endorsing another referendum.

People are giving her a way out but she is determined to go down fighting

Based on the last couple of weeks, does that make it more likely or not? Hard to tell when black is white, up is down etc.

    More likely I think

A second referendum is about the only thing that could easily command a majority in the commons

    mikewsmith

Well it depends on who is in charge, I can see May flipping before a likely successful no confidence vote in the government as a method of appeasement. Now there is a legal way out it’s only give those who are remain less of a desire to accept the shit deal. The hard brexit fans are still a minority however vocal they like to be.

So basically if/when the vote on the deal fails or May refuses to bring it we see what the next steps are.

The important message here is a 2nd referendum is not disrespecting the will of the people or the 1st vote. It’s seeking clarification on the direction we go next. No Unicorns, no piles of cash, no fantasies. Just some cold hard facts.

Doubt it. The English would need to be grown up enough to laugh at ourselves again, I don’t think that is the case any more.

Plus, to have jokes made about you often shows a kind of (admittedly paternalistic and patronising) affection. We English are probably just viewed as a bunch of thick twunts who aren’t worth the bother of mocking.

I think it’d help immensely from a PR perspective if we stopped calling it a second referendum. We had a second referendum in 2016, this will be the third.

From various friends/acquaintances living across Europe or who have been on holiday in Europe recently, it seems to be that we’re viewed as a bunch of thick twunts who should be mocked mercilessly for being so unbelievably stupid.

Britain’s standing in Europe is at an all time low. It might be helpful if some of that could reach the ears of TM but she’d probably just say “let me be very clear on this, Brexit means Brexit” like a malfunctioning robot.

Genuinely – please thank them for at least considering us worthy of mockery. If the shoe was on the other foot, I think my reaction would be “Oh, them. They’re just a bunch of tossers, I wouldn’t bother about them”.

So 30k a year for a 5 year visa for skilled workers or only 1 year visa for low skilled worker and not allowed to come back for a year.

It means I probably wouldn’t be able to come and live back in the UK.

For clarity any staff nurse ( band 5) with more than 8 years service and who works unsocial hours will be over £30 000.

No new recruits at below band 7 ( charge nurse / senior specialist nurse) will be over £30 000

London you do get a chunk more, Scotland a little bit more IIRC
