Sorry in advance, but I’ll keep it short.

I’m 62 with an arthritic hip. I want to keep riding and now use a Trek Rail 9GX. Admittedly not the best choice for a multi day tour but it’s that or nothing 🙁

I am planning to do the Traws Eryri later this summer with the longest day being 43km which on a real bike would have been easy but due to my dodgy hip is now impossible apart from using the eBike. Staying at B&Bs I’m going to be carryng a charger and there are a few top up places available en route. I already have the standard 4 amp version but see that there is a 6 amp fast charger version available. I’m considering buying the 6 amp fast charger to give a faster extra bit of help when I can get to a socket.

Your thoughts are most welcome and I thank you for them.

As far as I am aware, the fast chargers cause damage/problems with the battery and are best avoided. I think they lessen the number of charges it can take shortening its lifespan.

But lithium batteries are all the same charging. They charge quite quickly to 80% and the last bit takes longer as it kind of deep charges.

Have to admit to knowing little really. But for clarity on this if you go to the pedelecs forum, theres a couple of prolific members on there with lots of knowledge on electronics and battery voltages/ampage etc etc.

How much elevation over the 43km? Is it definitely more than you can get out of the battery?

I’d guess that the speed at which the battery charges is dependant on a number things like the internal temperature and how much charge there is when you plug it in. If you were just plugging it in for an hour mid ride, it might not actually charge any quicker using a 6a than it would using the 4A. Depends how happy the battery is and how quickly it wants to be charged.

The George at Penmaenpool toll bridge has some outside plugs, which a friend has made use of 😀

The toll bridge leaves the pedestrian gate open so you can get though (paying the 30p toll) regardless of the time, with gates at the other end to lift over

I’d expect you to be able to do 43km easily on the Trek, assuming reasonable use of the lower power modes on the flatter bits
