Some time ago i got an electric screw driver which has the power of a gnat so i was wondering if it is possible to get something that can screw together the IKEA stuff and drill a hole in a wall?

I’d expect just about any cordless drill/driver to do this. I use the cheapest Bosch one. Perfectly good. Struggles a bit with masonry, use a hammer drill for that.

Depends what else you want…everything’s some sort of compromise.
I’ve got a pretty beefy Makita hammer drill … it gets used around the house a lot and have a impact driver it shares batteries with…

Its a pretty good all rounder (whizzes out rotor bolts and tightens then on a low clutch then I finish by hand)

Also mixes cement/concrete/tile cement etc …

It’s good for 5-6mm holes in brick …
Li-ion is really great compared to old batteries as you can leave it charged and it works when you need it… I really friggin hate starting a job then finding the power tool needs 2 hours charge

However .. I use a pretty cheap mains powered hammer drill for more serious wall drilling. It’s chalk and cheese … and I’d probably even start with it on a 5-6mm hole if I think I’ll encounter brick but if your drilling walls is mainly hanging pictures then a decent combi hammer drill will do the job.

The impact driver is also really useful for house stuff and the fact it shares batteries with the drill is good… both were really useful building the bike shed… and the oak fireplace and ….

Cons… neither will fit in a bike toolbox….

My experience is its worth going for a decent brand but also then somewhat sticking with the brand and battery if you need other battery power tools but you can often get deals…. I bought based on a deal but so long as you stick with decent makes I’d just go with what you can get a deal on. (Bosch I’d definitely try for the Pro range though)

The cheap mains powered SDS can also chisel and chase out walls with ease… and you’d pay a lot for anything battery powered that can do the same!

So overall I’d say any decent make and 18v Li-ion and if you need bigger holes in walls or chase a cable just get a cheap mains powered one

A good combi will do that easily but you are looking at over a £100. Worth it in my opinion as a good quality tool is a joy to use. Makita lxt gets my vote. For the more budget conscious a cheap corded drill for the wall and a cheap drill driver for the screws. IKEA sell a cheap one. If it can’t put IKEA furniture together you should be OK taking it back

    Makita lxt gets my vote.

LXT is great if you have a whole set… however the just-pre-LXT you can get for bargain prices…if you look around (it’s identical except the pins of the bottom/connector) but the downside is buying extra (real Makita) batteries is harder (but not impossible) and so is finding other tools like circular’s/jigsaws

That said Screwfix have the LXT 3ah at £129….

+1 for the Makita. Usually on offer somewhere and very dependable.

We have the Makita cordless vacuum as well so this ensures the battery regularly gets a good run and charge.

I have a heavy duty Bosch SDS for proper masonry work.

Yep it will get you through most stuff … not great on masonry but it’ll do most stuff eventually.

You can probably get nearly the same drill cheaper though but with a slightly different battery interface..(just the pins.. it’s the same charger).. so if you are sure you’re just doing the one it could be cheaper to go for the pre-LXT but then if you need other stuff it will be harder to find it.

I have a Makita drill and impact driver … both are just pre-LXT… and 4 batteries in total. For me its handy but I sometimes wish I’d got the LXT simply because I might then have got other battery compatible tools.

However, any decent make with that sort of spec and Li-Ion (pref 18v) and at least one spare battery. (The beauty of the Li-Ion I find is it’s ready to use)
