Anyone ever tried doubling up on Rental push-on grips?

Saw something a bit ago by Paul Aston where he talked about installing push-on grips over the top of other push-ons. Wondered if anyone had any experience to recommend the best way of doing it, before I go ahead and classically balls it up…

Currently have the ultra-tacky renthals and they’re awesome, but looking for some extra girth for grip.

No apologies for slightly dodgy title and the perfect opportunity for double entendres…

I just can’t imagine that working. Let us know how you get on!

I’d be looking for a grip with more chonk, I can’t see the double grip scenario being humanly possible.

Oury or sensus probably fit the bill

    Sounds challenging!

perhaps you can put the outside grips in hot water to make them super soft and stretchy? Then ease the now soft and flexible grip over the installed grip? You might need some warm, water based lube to effect this.

did Aston post this idea on April 1?

I’d just pick some girthier grips if I was looking for a bigger handful on the bars.

My favourite grips of all time were some really cheap Specialized push on ones used with some sticky rubber tape from screwfix underneath to bulk them out a bit

I’ve got a set of pnw xl grips, they’ve got a nice chonky feel to them.

An early April Fools and I claim my £5. No way is this possible.

I like the idea of going back to push on grips. I have some waiting for the next bike along with locking wire and plyers.

I just can’t imagine how you get one push on grip over another.

Top tip for fitting push ons is to slide some zip ties lengthways inside them, slide the grip onto the bars with the zip ties still in place then slide the zip ties back out one by one.

+1 for Stevet1, you can also use isopropyl alcohol/brake cleaner as a fast evaporating lubricant (most lubricants will leave a slipply residue, not helpful at all). Or an air compressor is easiest if you have one but the cable tie “rails” work great.

And yeah fitting two sounds basically impossible, unless you manage to find some crazily thin one that you can fit inside a crazily slack one, and then fit both together maybe? But even if that’s possible it’s still going to be harder than just getting fatter grips.

A couple of years ago I bought some renthal grips off Amazon but when i tried to fit them to my sons bike the 2nd grip was way too wide diameter for the bar, despite the first grip fitting perfectly! After puzzling for a while I figured they must be motor bike grips and the wider diameter is for the throttle side???
Maybe Paul Aston buys two sets of these and fits the wider diameter over the thinner?

If I wanted extra padding inside a set of grips I’d just wrap some bar tape on the bars first. Hairspray works for me easing grips on as it dries tacky; got a small can in the tool box that’ll last forever. At the moment I’ve got long cut lengths of the following installed on Ritchey Kyoto bars; went straight on with the hairspray, left overnight, rock solid by morning.

Even with hairspray, alcohol and an air compressor how are you managing to slide a grip over bar tape?

The only way it might work is if you tried to stretch track grips which are 23.something rather than 22.2mm over some very old fashioned thin cotton tape, but that would be a nightmare.

Either that or this Paul guy is using something like a CV boot installation tool.

Just buy thicker grips, ESI chunky, Supercaz XL, etc. The good think about silicone foam grips is they offer actual cushioning not just thickness. I’ve got XXL hands so I’ve always struggled with OEM medium sized grips. The only ones I’ve ever found too big were some Uberbike XL’s. They had the usual lock-on issue of being too firm to go with the size.

I’m not convinced you could get one push on grip inside another, even if a handlebar wasn’t involved

Lol thanks all. I genuinely don’t think it was a April’s fool but been pretty good to hear people’s critiques and other recommendations for install/options. Big fan of push-ons – renthals tackys current wired and glued on, and been brill.

I’ll let y’all know if/when I do something stupid and attempt it. Been thinking silicones, grip tapes and other bits so if I manage, do I win that £5 @stingmered?!

So after 10 mins of wrestling with it I’ve managed to get one renthal push on grip on top of the other using the method I described above.

How do I post a pick on here?
