A few questions for the hive-mind.
I've been ripping the shoulder knobs off my High Roller 2 (2.4 3C Exo jobbies) so want to replace them with something a bit more... erm, stable. They need to cope with some NZ summer missions and should last me for a trip to Nepal next year.
I think I kinda liked the HR2s when they were holding together OK and a lot of tyres seem to be cut from a similar mould/concept these days.
Minions seem the obvious choice but is 2.3 or 2.5 more suitable for a front? I heard the mion casing comes up a bit smaller than HR, but looking at flat folded tyres in a shop this avro seemed to contradict this. Maybe they fixed it with the Minion DHF 2?
The Ardent 2.2 looks weedy and the 2.4 has a lot more material on the tread but isn't the Ardent casing huge?
I've heard the Hans Dampf suffers from breaking away side knobs too, so I should probably avoid them. I have a pair of Magic Mary (supergravity, 1 x verstar, 1 x trailstar) which would be a great front tyre, but they're heavy and drag. I could pair one up with a Rock Razor or something to get some silly speeds going.... but might have to just suffer the weight and get ripped 😀
No one local in NZ seems to stock the Mavic options so I've never seen them on the trails..
What else could I consider?
p.s. 650b has narrowed my options 😡
TL;DR - recommend me what tyres you are currently using (actually, please don't)
It's the 3c that's the issue not the hrs. Minions only come in 3c I think so they won't help. Try hr2 dual compound, or wmb vigilantes for harder wearing tyres.
Is it? The Minion side knobs are much more substatial than the HR's.
Minions only come in 3c I think
They also do a dual 60a/62a compound in 2.3 which is pretty much the same size as the old 2.5 and good for a rear tyre. That tyre is faster rolling and tough as old boots in EXO version. There is also the 2.5 super tacky which in EXO is also very tough.
Hans Dampfs are not a tough tyre, they fall apart surprisingly easily.
I'm on WTB Bronsons now, the Vigilante maybe looks more like what you're after?
Vigilante's looks ok. A few comments about the weak sidewalls, but the weight looks like they ought to be better than paper-thin.
If you're wrecking Maxxis, don't go near Schwalbe. As I saw somewhere else, they last as long as a cheap firework display. Kinda reflects my experience too.
My 3c 2.3 DHRII which is on the rear is starting to show signs of wear earlier than I would expect. 2.5 DHF 3c on the front is still in perfect condition.
