Having been a Guide Dog puppy walker for 7 dogs my wife has decided it was time for a dog of our own. Now as Guide Dog puppies come already named we never realised how difficult it would be to find a name that everybody in the family liked/agreed on. So some suggestions from the STW massive for a black Labrador may prove helpful.

    So here he is…..

    Thank you

There once was a war film with a black lab in it. Perhaps yours could have the same name?

Fido, Deefur….. God knows we called ours Kea and most people think she's named after the car or the shop.

Two options (apologies to those who have seen these before….)

1 – Nboogie. That way, if the dog is ever up on the furniture when he shouldn't be, you can yell "Get down Nboogie!"

2 – Myface. That way, if the dog is lagging behind as you walk through the park, you can yell, "Come on, Myface!"

If youre thinking about dambusters (or was it 'reach for the sky'?) then you're a very bad (but very funny) man.

Mines called Izzy but it doesnt really matter, she is a terrier so she never comes anyway.

My friends had a lovely mutt called Knobjockey at university. He used to come out on rides with us. Endless fun trying to find him in the woods as it got dark at night.

Have you considered naming it after your boss?

Been a few Black Labs in our family through the years, a quick list:

    Garth
    Kim
    Dougie
    Beth
    Bramble

Garth was a huge Lab I mean a true monster of a dog his food was served in a washing up bowl as we couldn't get a dog bowl big enough. He was softy though and never showed aggression towards family members but was a great guard dog. Remember a door to door salesman coming around selling burglar alarms, my Dad told him if you can get in our house right now I'll buy one. He walked towards the door and bid a hasty retreat when Garth let off a bark like Digby.

Our black lab was called Charlie – short for his pedigree name of "Charleston Pickle".

Springer/field spaniels we have had have been called Copper, Nickel, Bracken and Widget.

Bro's dogs currently called Dooley, Dandy and Dexter.

Call it Cat, then get a cat and call it Dog and make your neighbours think you've all lost it 😛

Hmm just noticed the irony of me, a guy with a Dog's name commenting on a Dog's name thread …. it's my second name not my first so I'm not that traumatised by it!

Dogs generally respond better to names with 2 clear vowel sounds in their name. Not sure if that is of any use to you at all !

    If youre thinking about dambusters

    Yeah it was 🙂

Saw it last year with the very (un)subtle overdubbing. I think it is now called Rex or something. Bloody political correctness.

Lucky you, my black lab is 12 and his name is Buddy, brilliant dogs, my new staffy pup is called Louie, had a huge list of names when we got him but Louie wasn't one of them! Spent 10 minutes with him when we got him home and it just poped on to my head, buddy was the same. Had thought of Nero, Cujo, Stan, a black lab here is called Hemp, I always quite liked it, let us all know your decision, good luck

Just call it 'the dog', it'll save hassle in the long run; 'go walk the dog', 'feed the dog' and when angry 'where's that bloody dog' or just resorting to shouting 'stupid dog' at it. You know it makes sense.

    damnit.

    'come here damnit'

    'your dinner is ready damnit'
'don't shag that hot girl's leg damnit'

    etc

It's a Lab so call it Hoover or Dyson. If it's anything like most of them it'll drag you under a bus for a chip.

Belcher is the basque for black. (OK, it's spelt Beltxa). Two syllables, vaguely amusing, talking point. Perfect!

An old sea captain I used to know at home had a Lab called Pilot – I thought it a terrific name!
