The driver stole our friends roof tent off their van in Bamford yesterday.

    It’s a pretty distinctive van

Have you tried reporting the registration to the police instead?

It’s a classic open and shut case

Reg isn’t legible unless they can clear up the image. Police are aware

I just tried a couple of free Image Enhancers and it is not like TV. All they did was blur and distort the numberplate even more. They might work better with the original image.

    M533WPS
    or perhaps
    M344VPS

Something like that plus the van model might let you do a little further searching

    Great, thankyou.

Gutted for them.. Brand new tent box, never used and it’s gone.

Is it really not visible in an earlier frame in the video or a large monitor? I can nearly make it out zooming in on my phone, but not enough to get a hit on the MOT checker. It’s a 2006 to 13 transit Mk7.

Could be a false or clone plate of course.

Edit, that sounds a bit mean, sorry. I hope they find the gits. I think it ends in KPS or KPZ.

You need to be more alpha male when you say “enhance” 😉

    MJ66 XPS i reckon

Looks like a cloned plate, as above that style of Transit is a 14 plate max.

It is distinctive though. Looks like it’s not got a rear bumper too

    Can’t be a 66 plate, unless it’s a false one. Probably between 06 and 63 or a personalised reg.

The only thing that makes me wonder about it being a 66 plate is that’s an older shape Transit isn’t it? The newer shape ones have been around since before 66.

EDIT: I see plenty of people got in with that key bit of detective work before me. 🤣

New Transit Custom came out on a 14 plate

There’s no way that Mk7 is a 66 reg. Also if could be a Mk6 (2000-2006/7) from the back they look almost the same.

    It’s a MK7 so ~14 plate max

I know it’s too late now – but for anyone else, shearnuts are a good fasteners for rooftents. I shear bolted an expensive roofrack to my Defender and then shear bolted the rooftent to that.

    security torx

Is a misnomer if ever there was one. It’s easier to get a security torx bit than JIS, every hardware barn in the country stocks them.

“Also if could be a Mk6 (2000-2006/7) from the back they look almost the same.”

    .

Definitely a Mk7.  High level brake light on the rear door, sloping window on the passenger side front door and no wrap-round headlights

If you’ve got the time and patience then putting what you think the reg might be into the MOT checker should eventually yield a Transit. Although it won’t if they are fake plates. Definitely not a 66 for a MK7, 56 maybe? 58?

Have you done a reverse image search on the logo yet?

Have you viewed the actual extracted footage ? You’ll likely see greater detail than of a photo of a (possibly less than 1080p) monitor display.

You can try https://www.partialnumberplate.co.uk/ but obviously it will only work if the plate is genuine.

They do indeed , and your 100% correct. They are more available than ever. However, you are imagining that your average Ned had the same level of knowledge as the rest of us. Goes around with a 6.3mm hex driver , and is willing to spend the time to undo them.

How do I know this ?
Because I work in a hardware retailer and we routinely get the public in thrusting their mobile phones within 6in of my face ” got a tool to undo this mate .I’ve never seen them before”

Shear bolts have to be drilled out , you could fit security torx screws blind , or fit nylock nuts on the blind side to make it a ball ache to remove

There are ‘free’ AI pic tools available. One of those might sharpen the image enough to make reading the logo at least possible.

I’ve been trying to work out what the trade is. Got a roofrack so maybe construction, but there are quite a few DC construction firms, and none use that design of logo.

It kind of looks like there are 3 letters. the D and C and maybe an O or even a C in the middle of them.

Anyone nearby with a ring doorbell you could ask with chocs to have a look if you have the exact time it passes.
MOT checker a possible way to try- bung in all the guesses see if the van description pops up.

Have you posted in in any local FB groups? They’re ideal for stuff like this.

I posted a video on FB when we were a victim of a hit and run and we had the drivers name and address in a couple of hours.

Yes but who carries a set with them?

A plain nut and bolt can be undone with a set of pliars by an opportunist.  The Venn Diagram of opportunists who are also Dyson repair men* has far less overlap.

*or women, or anyone else that carries a set of torx keys.

Even less common would be an imperial hex socket 😂

….or just shear bolt/nut them, not even molgrips (the tool not the STW’er) can get them off. Scroaty **** would probably still just use a grinder but at least it’s a bit more obvious.

Sorry – where is Bamford/Hope Valley?

What colour is the van? Image is greyscale, or close enough that I can’t make out real colours.

Also do you have the original image/footage? That image is a photo of a screen, the original will be better.

Do we think that plate is ending XPS?

‘As above that looks like the company is called ‘d4c’ ‘

Unfortunately, it may have been owned by themm previously, but I’d put money on it that they no longer own it, and , as has been said above, it is on false plates. Very very unlikely to be able to trace the van, and even more unlikely that the Police will do anything, even if they know where the van is located.

Yes, but then you can’t get them off either if you want to swap the tent for a box or bike rack or just not drive round with it the other 51 weeks of the year.

Then you have to accept the potential theft of an expensive rooftent.

Ignore my number plate hunch above, the potential van I found is not a crew cab.

If you’re using false plates you want to clone a vehicle similar to yours.
