Well, after stopping doing any kind of cycling for over a month now, the pain/ache from the knees is still present, and I feel like an old man, so to speak, whne i get up in the mornings. Appt with GP for the second time on Fri, and considering the possibility of having something longer term wrong with my knees.

Have tried all the usual suspects- glucosamine, cod liver oil, stretching. Position has not changed on the bike.

ANyone been in a similar situation- what did you find out? What scans did you have?

    Cheers for now!

Where is the pain coming from? is it one or both knees? any previous injuries to legs, back, hips, KNEES? common condition is chondromalacia, although you will need an arthroscopy to find out for sure.

sometimes your quads/itb pull the knee cap to the side and you get pain.
    massage/needles sorts it

Bang on with that massage thing Jedi. Regular stretching also helps keep it at bay. I think it’s the illo-tibial band (am happy to be corrected) that pulls the knee cap out of position. When it gets really bad even resting from cycling and running makes no difference. A good massage by some one who knows what needs doing will start to get it sorted. If you really do have a degenerative problem such as arthritis, get in touch with the Arthritic Association, you can hold that back to with diet ajustments. Best of luck.

    noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

ITB runs outside the leg fromt he hip and joins on to the lower leg just below the joint (on the protrosion just below where you can feel the joint). If the pain comes from this lump and/of spreads up the outside of the leg google ITB stretches.

The VMO Vsomething Medial Oblique (i think) is the one on the inside of the kneecap pulling the kneecap towards the other leg and keeps it centered. If the issue is in this area (commonly on the outer side of the kneecap) then google VMO strengthening. Usualy involves sitting against a wall without a chair and trying to crush a tennisball/beenbag/pillow between your knees.

Had x rays done about 2 months ago, 3 visits to the GP and am now finally reffered to a specialist, moderate to sever degenerative wear and tear showed in the X ray, I need an athroscopy to get it cleared out is my guess (and ive been here before lots of times) but am still waiting for the specialist visit, the ONE thing thats made it feel better is riding, I had 3 weeks where I couldnt get on the bike, then uncomfy for another 2-3 weeks or so, but ive since upped my riding to 2 times a week and the knee is about as good as its going to feel for now. Its not even locking up as much as it was.

If you can ride and its not killing you, ride, you will know when its borked.

Did you GP prescribe anti inflamatory gel? I found this did help ease it off.

Ibuprophen gell doent work any better than rubbing the area with any other gel/oil, there’s evidence to sugest that little or no of the ibuprophen passes through the skin.n If its an ITB injury then masaging the affected area will make it worse (its a friction problem to start with).

Most problems apaprently are muscular one way or another, its just a case of working out which ones doing the wrong thing. !urrent flavour of the month for my bad knee is tight hip flexors.

I had what sounds like a similar issue a few years ago. I was convinced I’d buggered my knee as it still gave me quite a lot of pain after a few weeks of doing very little.

GP suggested having a look inside but as a last resort I went to see a physio who decided it was muscular and fixed it after 2 painful visits and lots of stretches etc.

Worth a go before you let anyone poke things into your knee.

The gel worked for me, I didnt believe it would, I wasnt convinced it was inflamed, but it did get me enough movement to ride… I truly believe the improvment since then has been directly due to riding more in my case.

Truth is it could be any one of hundreds of things, the GP’s are good, but you need that specialist appointment to really find out, if it can be cured by a physio he will tell you that, they dont do ops they dont have too. (disclaimer)

I’ve got the wonky kneecap thing mentioned above. I find resting it has no effect or actually makes it worse. What does help is regular stretching and exercise.

According to my GP there is nothing wrong with my knee. The sports physio I went to see laughed at me a lot(apparently the way I walk and stand is hilarious) diagnosed me within about 5 minutes, and then gave me a programme of stretching and strengthening exercises to do. It has been roughly a year since I started doing the physio and although I still have a bit of a niggle with my left knee it isn’t really painful any more.

So anyway my point is go and see a proper sports physio and see what they have to say

Case-Sound advice and similar to my experiance. My Doc “fitest bloke I’ve seen in weeks”. Stretches and massage and stick at the stretches (he says and forgets himself).

If it’s IT Band Syndrome then massaging WILL help, not on the pain area on the knee though, but massgaing your quad and outer quad/IT Band. Sports massage and/or foam roller will be best for this.

Pay to go and see an Osteopath or Physio who has an interest in knee problems (ideally via recommendation). Get them to say what they think is wrong, what they plan to do about it and why. It should be improving within 2-4 visits. If it isn’t ask your GP to refer you to your local knee surgeon (things can get expensive at this point).
There are loads of causes of knee pain, many/most not diagnosable via a biking forum.
    Good luck.
