So I gave this a go today and it didn’t exactly work out, well it didn’t workout at all.

I have a caadx with maddux wheels and I wanted to change to tubeless, I have been told that you could get any rim/tyre combo to work however this just didn’t work.

So I got some gorilla tape for the rim seal, put the valve in, stuck the tyre on (Sammy slick) added the goo then went with Co2 it went up and straight back down, I tried a few other pumps but nothing.

Was I just fighting a losing battle and it was never going to happen or was I missing something, like an official tubeless kit.

Any ideas?

Are the tyres tubeless, if not you may get them up but in all probability they roll and burp.

I have the same wheels set up tubeless! If you search my post history I gave a full description somewhere of what I did.

Edit here you go, note my comments relate to a dale Maddox rim, taped with lecy tape and a proper tubeless tyre.

Thanks. When putting the tape in do you completely cover the inside of the rim with leccy tape/gorilla tape or just part of it?

FYI, CO2 will cause the tubeless fluid to harden and lose its effectiveness. Not the cause of your initial problem but you don’t want your current efforts to be in vain.

CO2 (If normal pump won’t do it) to get the tyre to seat, then deflate, add stans etc via valve then reinflate with pump is how I’d do it

I couldn’t even get it to sit. I covered the inside of the rim with gorilla tape, do i still need to leave the inside slightly showing some metal for the tyre to sit? So basically just cover the bottom of the inside of the rim where the rim tape usually covers?

If only someone would invent a rubber tube to sit within the tyre. You could put air in this tube and it would inflate the tyre. I’m going on Dragon’s Den.

Advice from both Stans and WTB is to apply tape that goes right to the edge of the rim.

You need to put enough wraps of gorilla tape to make the tyre *very* tight to put on. If you don’t struggle a bit to get it onto the rim then you’ve not used enough tape. If you have, then the tyre will be snug against the tape and there is really no way for the air to escape. Non tubeless tyres may blow bubbles a bit until their permeability is fixed by the sealant but after that it should be rock solid.

So I need to keep taping a bit more, the only way I can get this tyre up is by using Co2 will it really knacker the fluid?

Are these the wire bead Sammy Slicks that come with CAAD-Xs?

I’ve found if you use enough tape the tyre will be tight and will go up with a track pump (plus a bit of soapy water around the beads.

Right, iv managed to seal the tyre on to the rim and it is staying up. however, when I get the pressure in the tyre to over 40psi Im getting no leaking from the tyre but it’s leaking through the side of the rim?!?, iv checked both rims and there the same they both have a join and there’s air leaking from the join, any ideas if I can resolve this?

If you’ve got tubeless goop in there, hold the wheel upright with the leaky joint at 6 o’clock and give it a good waggle to spread the sealant around, should plug the gaps.

Yep, keep splashing the goop about. It should settle down in a bit.

Ive just had great success on stans tape with Specialised terraX tubeless cross tyres on some A class cross tubeless rims …

It’s done, goo in specific spot worked,, now solid. Just quickly if you think you have put too much goo in, is there away of getting it out?

I ran some wire bead Ardents tubeless for a couple of years with no issue.

You could try and draw some back out through the valve but really – I’d leave it be if it’s sealed.

Another tip (that not everyone will agree with). I don’t do this checking/topping up business. Just ride it and carry a tube. One day it will puncture and fail. On that day fit the tube go home and then redo the tyre. It might be 6 months, it might be years.
