I’m buying a new shed in the coming weeks looking at 15×9.

I’ve cleared the ground which is reasonably level at the minute. I’ve phoned the company up who suggested a concrete base (I can’t afford that route) or they did suggest slabs. They mentioned that concrete blocks wouldn’t be substantial enough.
Any ideas on this as my previous shed which was smaller and seemed ok on concrete blocks. I’m sure the STW massif can help.

we have a 18×12′ shed laid on the cheapest paving slabs available at the time. The slabs were laid on a weak sand cement mix. It’s been up for just over ten years now without any problems.

A concrete base isn’t a massive job and doesnt have to be expensive. With a couple of mates you can easily sort it over a weekend.
The way sheds are built now they form a cube (walls screwed into base) so if it’s uneven and there’s any movement it will slowly pull itself apart.
I’ve got a 18×10 in the back garden on a concrete slab. Thin kof it as an investment and get it right first time :O)

I’m assuming they are suggesting that the base of the shed needs to be fully supported and not just on four or six or however many concrete blocks, due to the bending of the shed base between the blocks?

THe last shed I put up was on blocks and it was very creaky every time I went in it with noticeable floor bow. Wasn’t an issue though as I only stored a lawn mower and other stuff in there, but if it was being used regularly or if there was any significant weight in there then I guess it wouldn’t have lasted very long. These things are not built like they used to be obviously.

My current shed is built on what I thought was a pretty level new concrete base. But then the bearers for the shed aren’t properly straight so it creaks and moves a bit anyway!

My new slightly tougher “log cabin style” shed coming in the next few weeks is going to be built on this system. It’s working out cheaper and faster than a big concrete base (remember the horrendous skip / much away costs these days!)

Adjustable feet, on dense concrete blocks at roughly every metre. Tanalised sub-base framework with extra hung joists giving 500mm (ish) centres all the way across.
