I need a new front brake to replace SLX and all the usual suspects look v. expensive. I read previous comments that Clarks M2 were a reasonable cheap option. I have seen M3s cheaper for a set than Shimano for one . It’s for a decent bike so should I just bite the bullet and buy Sh/Sram/Hope or are Clarks a decent alternative?

I’ve got M2s. They are ok in that they do stop you but the levers are not great, and they lack power and modulation compared to even my 10 year old slx/2012 Deore on other bikes. I’ll be looking to replace them with better. Mt420 4 pots look good

We have m2 and m3 here. The m2s have been great and look very similar to low end Shimanos. The m3 are a PITA, the reach adjusters “self adjust” in use and the lever cylinders are weeping fluid. I think I’m going to send them back and replace with Shimano BR-315 or BR-365.

For what you want I’d get a better brake. For budget builds, kids and hybrids etc the M2 is a decent enough brake. On the front of a proper mtb with decent spec I’d want something a bit nicer and more powerful.

The popular cheap shimano brake at the moment is the mt501 – although I think there is also now a new deore level 4 pot brake in the new groupset that I assume is largely the same.

Im not a huge fan of shimano brakes but there’s no faulting the power. My road bike with 785 / 505 calipers on it will stoppie in dry weather whilst you’re still seated.
