Too right. I’ve spent a fortune on RCs now. Felony came today but I’m drowning in work and haven’t even opened the box! It’s also pouring with rain, so that’s taken the edge off a little. Will post some photos once I get it going. Likely shots of before and after the inevitable smash!

    @jamessfts

The WPL trucks are very capable, they do them with and without the metal upgrades.

Agree with you about this thread being dangerous to finances.

absolutely. I have now finished ‘restoring’ my classic sonic fighter (finally found some shock towers after a year of looking!) so i now have 3 fully working cars.

Sat here itching to finish work and am over excited about the choice of riding my newly rebuilt bike, or playing with my rc car. I’m 34!

Obvious choice is both, even if we are in the process of moving house 😳

Oi, @Harry_the_Spider, where’s the video of the tank in action????

Not mine. This one has had the metal tracks and gears upgrade.

That reminds me mine is in my basement, not been touched for a while. Kind of lost interest after the turret up down motor went.

Mine had a high torque motor / gearbox and metal tracks upgrade. I couldn’t stop the tracks from coming off, that is until I bought a proper aftermarket tensioner as I just couldn’t get enough tension on it stock.

It’s loads of fun when it works but mine was unreliable. It was better after the upgrade but something is always wrong with it. I must dig it out and try fixing that turret motor now.

Well, mine was awesome fun for the 3 minutes it worked. Quick look underneath and the ‘Tamiya’ battery connectors on both car and battery are scorched. I was using the upgraded 5000 nimh battery that they sold as an upgrade. I’m like a sad child at Christmas.

@Tom-B I`m suprised its fried – the voltage should be OK – must have been a dodgy connection. they only tend to go/fry on Lipos where the currents are higher

tamiya connectors are well known to be the the least efficient of all connectors and i cut mine off and add deans connectors (only as that it what my charger has as standard)

Ive just got a pack of them solderseal things for auto electric connections – bloody excellent! (i have a classic VW van ive been doing some electrics in too – it another hobby – basically a full size petrol RC car but with added welding)

Yep, tamiya connectors are crap. TBH Deans and XT60s aren’t brilliant either, it’s weird that rc hasn’t arrived at decent standards for these basics. (XT are I think the newest on the block and they would be would be good if easier to solder and if they had strain relief, but, they don’t so bleh)

The outlaw is my first rc car and seems pretty good to me. I have got a couple of extra 3000mah spare batteries for more fun time. Good turn of speed and can crawl reasonably slowly but not a proper crawler. As for robustness, I sometimes wonder what people expect them to stand up to when you look at the YouTube videos-the way they are treated is horrendous. Mine hasn’t broken yet and but I did fry a motor-only a few quid to replace. Apparently you should let them cool off if you can’t bear your finger on the motor or so I was told.
Don’t drop it from a great height at high speed and it should last!

Can you actually get a serious(ish) rc car for £50 or so?
I’m guessing not and apologies if this has been discussed, there’s a lot of pages to scroll through on this thread!
My 6 year old has £50 in birthday cash from family and he wants to buy an rc car. He’s had a few generic cheapos and they are rubbish, don’t really work well, very short battery and break very quickly.

We’ve been watching vids on some traxxas models but I’m not giving him more money… that would be too easy

So, is there a car that everyone is amazed by around £50? I’m guessing not
    Cheers

I don’t think getting a serious RC car for a 6 year old is a good idea.

A serious RC car will just end up getting crashed or cause an injury. This is what I bought to get my 4 / 9 / 10 year old into RC in a much more controlled way.

Proper pistol grip controller with a dial to reduce the top speed:

It’s so small that you can’t do any damage to the car / yourself:

It has a lipo so runs for about 40 minutes and charges on a USB-C. It comes with 1 pre-painted shell and 2 un-painted ones if you want to get into painting shells:

It’s so simple there’s not much to go wrong. The most annoying thing is having to take it apart to clean out the fluff trapped on a regular basis and it is properly fiddly:

There’s a race track on a mat that you can buy. That’s me racing with my son:

The 2 cars and the mat comes to about £100 on Banggood, so your 6 year old can use the £50 to buy his car and you can buy yours + the track. I ordered on Monday and received on the Saturday which isn’t bad at all.

I do let my 10 year old loose on my bigger stuff occasionally but under very close watch.

I’ve decided that its probably easier for me to just replace the tamiya connectors on mine with Deans. A question: I’ve bought an overlander nx20 charger, can I simply replace the connector on that too?

Crikey, it’s all moved on a bit since I last had an RC car, ooo, mebbe 30 years ago? Prevaricated all week, 90% I’ll go for the Delta XV-01, then there’s a the questions about batteries, controllers, motor and ESC! Will read the rest of the thread and if I don’t get clear answers – I’ll be back! 🙂

Questions before I get stuck in –

    – Any good online shop recommendations?
    – Is there a good idiot’s guide to batteries, motors and ESCs?

Ignore me if any of that is in the preceding 42 pages…. 🙂

    PS – want a tank, they’re ace! 🙂

I’m pretty new to this as well but this forum has some useful guides in it if you search – https://www.msuk-forum.co.uk/forums/forum/51-general-electric/

I have found Modelsport to be good – delivered my Rival MT10 the day after I ordered it!

Thanks for that, have ordered the WPL C24-1 with an extra battery and some softer tyres as those were the main points mentioned in the reviews. For £50 delivered it should be a good entry into RC crawlers without breaking the bank and as you say looks to be plenty of scope to upgrade if needed.

Well, my new project has just turned up. I really like the Lancia Delta body on my XV01. I must say I didn’t like the Subaru Impreza body as much. So to keep with the Lancia theme:

It’s a Killer body Lancia 037 with the rally sticker kit. I also managed to get hold of a rally interior as well.

Still got the Classic Mini body to finish for my M03 before starting that though. At the current rate (1st day off work in the new year today!), I think it will probably be summer by the time I finish it. Still can’t wait though.

    @hooja.

My lad has a maverick iON. A little above budget but really quite a good robust car. Comes RTR. Different styles of shell, from stadium truck to rallycross car.

@jamesfts where did you order your wpl c24 from?
I’m going to order one too but can’t find one that offers options

Problem is I don’t know. The wheelbase and width are right but the xv has the motor right at the front. What I read is if the real car has its engine in the front, it will fit.

The 037 is mid engine though so might not fit. If it doesn’t, think I will have to buy a TT02.

Well, let us know – I’m hoping for a bashing shell and a display shell, be good to mix it up but no probs if it’s two Deltas. 🙂

SCX24, great fun indoors, my 5yrs old driving, slow enough not to damage anything!

Well… my 6 year old just used his birthday money to buy a WPL c24-1 (I’m gutted, as I wanted that one), so I have also ordered a MN 99sa.
Both from banggood, should be a good laugh when they arrive

I’ve got an MN99, it’s ace. No idea how well it’s going to stand up to regular use, especially proper crawling but it’s so light, especially compared to my “basically made of steel and brass” axials. Lovely wee thing.

Sorry, only just seen this. I ordered from Banggood, was the easiest and cheapest option to get the additional battery etc.

I’ve finally caved and ordered a WPL C14MK directly from WPL. I ordered last night and got the dispatch notification this morning.

I like the idea of building the kit and from what I’ve seen the metal kits are pretty good. Brass gears, proper bearings, metal axle housings, 2speed transmission etc for £62 delivered. Obviously it’s more expensive than the RTR version and I need to supply my own radio etc but it means I can specify what I install.

The new FTX Ranger XC is a similar size and I almost bought one, it looks cool and seems great value for what you get.

I’ve ordered a WPL D12 off eBay this morning too. Apparently that’s UK stock so should be here by the weekend.

They are a lot of fun and being built in a variety of ways, join a WPL d12 group on FB to see.

So, upgraded the connectors on my Outlaw to Deans. Stock battery is still fairly posh, but the 5000nimh see’s it running really well! Had a great raz around this afternoon with it!

Need to get another battery, and another frickin car as my gf keeps hogging it!

The Delta’s in the post, should arrive tomorrow – excited like a kid on Christmas Eve. 🙂

In absolutely no hurry to build as I want to do it right (that won’t last), but I need to start thinking about other kit. Batteries are a bit of a mystery to me – seems like LiPo are all the rage, what do the numbers mean? Broadly, are 2S and 3s like outputs they can deliver, and the mah the capacity? And what are “turns” on a motor specification?
