Looks great! What paint is it? It’s got a nice sparkle to it.
Looks like yours has slightly different front tyres to mine. I’d be interested to hear what you think about the handling. I find it quite understeery. I suspect it’s down to the tyres – I keep meaning to buy some mini spikes for it.
If that doesn’t help, then I’ll probably by the turnbuckle kit & spend ages buggering up the geometry.
One thing I found which is a bit weird – with the car off the ground if you spin the back wheels, the joint coming out of the gearbox fouls the wishbone. it doesn’t do it once the car is on the ground with some weight on the suspension. I have seen a few people attack the wishbone with a stanley knife to trim some material away.
@stumpy01 it’s nothing special, just a Tamiya rattle can. Blue Metallic.
Pleased how it turned out though. Was a bit worried looking at it after it dried, but once the outer film came off it look much better.
I bet Tamiya sales are doing VERY well over this lockdown lol
Not just tamiya, I spoke to a model shop earlier today as I am trying to track down some parts for my sons car and he said he has never been busier in his 25 odd years of trading, not even his best christmas. He said people are literally buying everything he has in stock.
The Drifter is an AE86 Corolla on an MST RMX chassis.
The Turbo-mac’s totally don’t go with the body but they had the tarmac tyres on them at the time.
Drift cars are dangerously addictive on the detail front.
Im about to give up on my drift car – it seems that unless you have a perfect surface it’s near impossible. Doesn’t help that I thought I was a hero and bought the 2wd version..
Just waiting for my order of pinion and spur gear for my 2wd stadium truck. Imagine my horror when a nitro re fuel bottle drops out the Jiffy bag! Someone got my bits! My bottom lips out. Good job kids were too busy playing fortnight to notice. The wait continues…
I have built all of mine, but as this is the first time I will have done a proper shell, I am taking my time on that. Was a bit nerve wracking cutting out the shell and tail, need to mask up and paint over the next week.
I have put a 540 sport tuned motor in it. Looking forward to taking it out.
I put the 540 motor from the terra scorcher in to the Grasshopper, it makes it a bit more lively!
Nearly finished my SCX10 ii crawler build, but I’m already eyeing up another project! I’ll post pics of my Jeep in here when it’s done, but I’m thinking of a Nascar based on a TT01/02 chassis next.
I’ve got a Sakura D3 RWD. Running absima esc and motor and a savox servo. I’ve ordered a gyro for it today in the hope it makes it driveable but I’m not holding out much hope. In which case it’s going on eBay to find another crawler!
Just had a quick test of my colt with the bigger voltz 1600 nimh battery. Am now glad I didn’t get a lipo for our little garden.
I’m amazed at how much quicker it is, I managed to make it back flip by reversing.
@Harry_the_Spider Grasshopper tyres? I’ve not started building mine yet. Did you use any washing up liquid or anything?
Are you painting the body?
Brute force and threats of violence.
Yes. Just the colours suggested in the instruction, but I’ve done the driver to look like Senna.
Took it for a spin in the woods with the kids this afternoon. Too much power for the tyres and massive understeer, but what a laugh! Very tough too as some of the crashers were quite brutal.
Do the wheels and tyres first to get it out of the way! It will also shift 40 tiny nuts and bolts off the work surface.
One thing that I got wrong was setting up the speed controller. Ignore the instructions in the car manual about connecting the motor and use the ones that are specific to the speed controller. Also, the rear tyres are directional and I suspect that having to take one off would be a joyless experience.
Well done Harry, enjoy.
I also struggled with the tyres. Resorted to a tyre lever in the end.
Only had a chance to run mine briefly in the garden. Torque Tuned engine wheelies from stationary and is more than quick enough (for now). Front tyres crap on hard surfaces, lots of understeer, but not too bad on grass.
Already looking at spare front wheels and tyres. Thinking slightly wider 4×4 front wheel with a mini spike for off-road and a narrower soft slicker tread for hard. Site I’ve been looking at has Schumacher wheels and tyres and a front hex adaptor for a fiver which should make other wheels work. Anyone recommendation for specific tyres? Like other have said, very little Tamiya parts available at the moment.
Must admit, i much prefer it than the Grasshoper, faster, more responsive, sharper turning, but massive fun for what’s 1/3 of the price of the bigger one.
Only downside is it being potentially more fragile.
