hi, can't seem to sort out my chain line. Its a 1x10 set up and the chain appears to be sitting too far out at the chain ring : so it's '/' as opposed to '\'

I've therefore brought the chain ring in as much as possible, by removing all BB spacers from he drive side then putting about 4mm worth of washers between chain ring and spider. So much so the chain ring teeth are only about 1mm from the chain stay which isn't ideal. The line is still '/' and is noisy etc.

am is missing something? The only other thing I can think of doing is somehow moving the cassette outwards using a spacer but that would mean removing the top gear ?!

the photo below was taken before I put the washers on the chainring.

FWIW its a supersteel steel hub and an XT cassette - are these known to sit too high?

What's the chain line look like when it's in the smallest cog at the back?

Is your frame straight?

cheers, here's a few pics I took last night; one with chain on lowest gear, one on highest gear and one directly over the downtube to show frame alignment. The rear tyre is centred on the downtube so on the face it doesn't look out of whack. so, how to sort this? Any advice is welcomed 🙂

What cranks are they?
What is the bottom bracket shell width?
Is that a Shimano Bottom bracket?

Your cranks aren't fitted correctly anyway. The little flat plate on the NDS should be slid in so that it engages in the hole in the crank axle. If it can't then I suspect your BB shell is 73mm and you should only have one BB spacer fitted - on the drive side.

Is it actually a problem? It's easy to obsess about it but you have an angled chain in at least 9/10 gears, and as long as your chainring's within the space taken up by a double you still have equivalent chainline to what everyone thinks is fine for a double setup... Mine are all "sort of in the middle" and ime it works fine, but if anything it's probably best to be a little offset to the left.

Bloody hell that's a good spot!!
I suspected there may be too many spacers on there
What is the shell width OP?

hi, yeah I've just noticed the crank plate - it must have shifted when I was messing around.

its a mtb hollowtech bb and its 73 bb shell. I've taken all bb spacers off drive side and I've got 2 (I think) on nds, in an effort to bring the chain ring in

the cranks are deore m627 double chain ring

the issue I've got is that its very noisy and grindy at lowest gear which suggests the chain line is out but its impossible to bring the chain ring in any further. In fact its in danger of scraping against the chain stay if one of the teeth gets bent in.

its 73 bb shell

One drive side spacer only then - otherwise your crank may fall off!!
Chainring can be as close as it wants to the chainstay as long as it doesn't touch - if it does then you need a smaller chainring
