We will be in touch
I've recently bought a Nukeproof Giga 297 and I'm looking to change the crankset, basically because the Raceface Ride one it came with has looks only a mother could love and I'd prefer a lighter Shimano crank. This is the first boost rear end bike I've had and I'm confused over what exactly I need to ensure drivetrain compatibility and that I'm not going to have any clearance issues with the chainstay. With a 142 rear end you could basically chuck on any old crank and it would be fine but I'm lead to believe it may be more nuanced with a boost rear end? The current crank has a 52mm chainline, do I just need to make sure any new crank also has a 52mm chainline or are there any other considerations?
Thanks 🙂
Chainline makes very little different imo. The only issue with needing boost is clearance on the chainstays. If you have a spare non boost chainset see if that fits, and if it's close then you should be able to work out how much wider you need to go.
Stick with Shimano normal 52mm chainline, don't go boost 55mm if not needed, previous Giga models specced with Deore and SLX, XT came with 52mm.
Thanks, I'm sure I've got an old non boost one lying about somewhere so I'll give that a go 👍
Noeffsgiven...... that is what I initially assumed. Thanks
Depends how old your old non boost is 😀, currently shimano non boost is 52mm but older 4 bolt was 50mm, you could possibly get away with 50mm if chainring is 32t or less.
OK, there's a couple of boost chain line standards (of course there is) 52mm, and from a few years ago; 55mm.
SRAM adjust the chainline via offsets of the DM chainset, so you can get 0mm,3mm, and 6mm off sets, they are for (in order) 55mm chain line, 52mm and non boost.
Shimano adjust the offset by the whole crankset and can be identified by the suffix on the part number -10, -20, -30. and they're the opposite so -10 for non boost and so on.
Then you'll have to look at the spacers you'll need for the BB shell width. Don't forget that you'll need a new BB.
It's probably best to bang out a quick email to Nukeproof and ask them directly
Thanks Nick, Jesus it's complicated, but thats helped somewhat!! Already sent nukeproof an email but not had anything back as of yet. Standard's aren't really standard at all if every company does something different 😂
Race Face ride are 24mm axle same as Shimano, surely it's just a straight swap to preferred Shimano 52mm cranks, no need to touch the threaded BB, unless I'm missing something.
Don't Raceface and SRAM just have a different dish to the boost chainrings ? Like, they are flatter than the non-boost ones?
Shimano do it different I guess!
@noeffsgiven, I always change the BB if I change cranksets, 1. The cranks are coming off, you may as well, 2. they're pretty cheap, order it at the same time as the new crankset and you'll have everything fresh, and you'll know how longs it's been in there. 3, old crankset may have worn the old BB bearings in an odd way.
@desperatebicycle: Yes, they have three "dish" shapes (or offsets) 0mm, 3mm, 6mm. Most boost on most bikes is 3mm offset (52mm chainline) for SRAM and Raceface, but some from a few years back started using the newer 55mm standard, so it's always worth checking., and at least with SRAM and Raceface you only have to buy a new chain ring, not the whole cranskset like you do with Shimano.
Nickc, that's not a bad idea but for a different reason, I'll assume the bike came with a downgraded cheap BB if it's not specified on the sites spec sheet, I've seen high specced bikes with bb52, considering they buy in bulk for a fraction of the cost it's realIy tight fisted penny pinching imho, but that's a different story, I assumed it was quite new though given they said recently bought nukeproof giga, personally I've put three different cranks in the same XTR bb, if it ain't broke mentality 😀
Yeah, fairy'nuff, if you've spent the money on a decent one already and it's all still good, makes sense to keep it in there. 👍
Thanks all for the input, the bike did indeed come with a no mark BB so I'd be inclined to change it at the same time as the crank 👍
