Has anyone used this from eBay:

    Blind bearing puller for hubs

Available in precise bearing sizes, what are the disadvantages over e.g. an expensive kit when I only (currently) want the one size?

Or any advice for similar, reasonably cheap tools? Are any of the kits around £40 on amazon, eBay etc any good?

It’s for a Specialised HiLo 15mm front hub, I’ve tried using a screwdriver but I can’t depress the central tube enough to get an edge on the bearings, and the enduro V type bearing puller similarly can’t find the edge (though was useful for getting the 2 piece bearing caps out, which I failed to achieve with fingers, pliers, or a vice!)

    Thanks!

I use those exact ones and they are superb.

Just shove on the outside of one bearing, tighten up to expand internally, gently heat the outer hub shell (kettle water works well for this as 100C is about the perfect temperature) and then knock out the bearing with a punch from the other side. The remaining bearing can be pushed out with the axle.

I have a few for various uses (hubs and VPP lower link bearings).

I made one from a piece of threaded bar. I bought the kit you have above, but found it wasn’t small enough for the Horst Link bearings so i made this after a bit of Googling.

In short, you put in place, used the screwdriver to expand it behind the bearing then use a socket + washers + nut to extract it

    Worked a treat.

Needs must and all that 🙂

Really surprised that the eBay chap didn’t have one in your size though – he has loads of different variations. I suspect if you’d asked, he would have made it for you.

I’ve used a braeview_engineering (the seller you linked) tool from eBay and it’s great. Strongly recommended.

Thanks all, looks like I’ll go for one unless someone can recommend a slide hammer blind bearing puller set with a decent range of MTB bearing sizes for less than say £40?

Nah. Honestly, you only need slide-hammers for truly blind bearings (e.g. those pressed into gearbox casings). Pretty much every bike bearing you can at least get to the back-side of it, so a wedge-solution (as linked originally) is much more versatile and reliable.

And remember the heat. Since I started heating stuff, I only ever use my soft hammer for removing bearings. (With the one exception of a press-fit BB in a Giant frame that I think had been fitted with Araldite! That took a lump hammer to get out 🙂 )

Your wish 🙂 I’ve got a similar set which is great for hubs and bottom bracket bearings.
