  • Bike stolen from work van – whose insurance?

My commuting bike was stolen from our work van last night. I’d been to a site in it from the office, having cycled to work, then went home after I’d finished on site. My plan was to drive in this morning then pedal home.

Am I correct in assuming that this should be done under my insurance, or should it go through work’s insurance?

Yours, assuming you mean your home (or bike) insurance

    Yeah, my home insurance.

Check with HR. In the past, when I’ve had company cars, none of them have been insured with theft of personal property included.

I know our van insurance doesn’t cover things left within it

Perchy- this was Edinburgh too 😳

Prepare for major disappointment. For years I didn’t realise my own bike insurance didn’t cover being left inside any vehicle.

Depends on the insurance. I’ve seen bike policies that are happy with ‘locked and out of sight’ and policies that just ban vehicles full stop. From that point of view, a van has an advantage as it’s contents are out of sight, but different insurers have different attitudes to vans also.
