  • Bike shops in Stockport?

I’ve just moved to Stockport from Sheffield and gone from being surrounded by bike shops, 18 Bikes etc, to having no idea where, if any, are in Stockport?

Is anybody from over this way and have any recommendations for a new LBS. I’ll still travel out to 18 Bikes for big purchases but I need somewhere for bits and bobs.

    Thanks

The only bike shop you need is north west mountain bikes in cheadle.

NWMTB in Cheadle is good from what I’ve heard, as is the Bicycle Smithy in Hazel Grove.

I was going to say the same as above!

    North West MTB
    Bicycle Smithy
Wills Wheels (bit further north up the A6).

There’s 3 branches of Evans (Deansgate, Manc Velodrome and that indoor ski place near the Trafford Centre).

And if you head south down the A6 from Stockport there’s a place in Disley called Freeride Cycles (stocks Cube and a couple of other brands) and a shop in New Mills called Sett Valley Cycles (bit more of a roadie shop but good for repairs).

From personal experience, I’d trot down to Congleton and see the chaps at Cycle Centre.

Ah brilliant, I’d seen Freeride and heard of NWMTB but not Bicycle Smithy. That’s just around the corner.

Cheers everyone. I love this place.

I have a used Bicycle doctor in Rusholme, 5 miles along the A6 towards Manchester. It’s a workers co-op and very different from some of the big shops, I found all the staff very helpful. Not MTB specialists but good for general bike stuff – I bought a Brompton from them on C2W scheme, and they also found for me a French standard cotter pin for some old Peugeot cranks – which is probably as unusual a thing as anyone would want.

As above NWMTB is good and friendly. Royles is in wilmslow too. There was sportive nation in hazel grove but its closed down it seems.

Royles in Wilmslow don’t do Mtb any more, its all roadie, track, tri and cx stuff.

Cyclestore in Mongleton is pretty decent and my first choice, not had great experiences in NWMTB so its a last resort for me. I have heard good things about them though, a buddy goes on the shop rides which are decent enough/friendly.

Are withington cycles any good? I like the bloke in there but I’m not sure I’d leave my bike there. Don’t know why really, just a gut feeling!

not been for a whle but that’s a shock. They opened a new store in the middle of wilmslow to cater for the tri-guys but the store out by the roundabout was still stocking MTB last time I was there. Shame if it’s no longer 🙁

    Loads mate.

Sett valley cycles – great shop bit roadie oriented but Sam & stu know their shit when it comes any kind of bikes, prompt repairs too : ) 8quid for a wheel true mini service.

Freeride cycles – again cracking shop, one of the bigger ones but doesn’t stock the biggest range of spare, good repairs but not the quickest but go above & beyond.

In-gear in poynton is supposed to be pretty good – stu from sett valley works there.

Bicycle smithy – miserable twunt, some people really shouldn’t work in costumer services….

Royals wilmslow – pretty good shop, but shite for repairs & can sell oil to the Arabs.

NWMTB – great shop, loads of spares but only had luck with dieter one of the mechs..

Have to pull Banks up about Bike Smithy. John is a really nice guy. I stopped going to royals as they weren’t interested unless they had a big sale and were cocky with it. NWMTB is always top dollar but well stocked.

I’ve ended up going in to John at Bike Smithy regularly. Always quick, friendly service from a bloke who doesn’t speak any bull…

Would live to find out where the quiet, mild mannered mechanic who used to work at North West, then Royals went to. He was great and really knew his stuff.

    Couldn’t disagree more.

For me, THE bike store in Stockport. Knows his stuff, doesn’t bullsh*t, great service, honest.

    Highly, and often, recommend.

Andy Kyffin at NWMTB is probably the most knowledgeable person ever about mtb’s and is a good resource for all sorts… if i had any ‘specialist’ jobs needed doing (seized bb/facing..other more engineering type jobs) i’d go there. The prices of stuff there are pretty high but nwmtb does sell a lot of primo brands i guess.

Royles in wilmslow no longers does mtb. just road and tri and tarty stuff at that… i never go there.

For my road bike i usually drop in to rick green in handforth… very old skool and a real miserable bugger but knows his roadie shizle for sure.

I have found Jamie at High Peak Cycles in Glossop to be a lovely bloke for all my mtb requirements… he is usually very busy and it’s usually just him by himself so don’t be put off at first but if youbecome a ‘regular’ Jamie is a legend! he even makes me a brew when i drop in!

Was Andy Kyffin not Steve Peats mechanic back in the day?

QFT. Jon might not fawn all over you but he does know what he’s talking about and he’s my go-to choice at the moment

as for the mechanic you mention, that was Ben (Platt?) – after Royle’s he went to the USA for a while, when he came back he was at NWMTB again for a while but don’t know where he is now. His brother posts on here too, I think

Yes, Andy was Peaty’s mechanic and is now his manager I think? Over the years several of the mechanics from NWMTB have worked on the world cup DH circuit for various riders.

Well I’m off to bicycle Smithy today to get some bits and see if they have a spare frame box I can have to ship a frame I’ve sold.

I appreciate all the feedback thanks.

Might bump into you! Off in a bit when a couple of chores are done!

NBT – Ben rings a bell. Short dark hair, glasses. As I said, he came across chilled and polite.

I’ve just got back from Bicycle Smithy and the guy in there was really nice. Asked me if I knew the area, sorted me out a frame box and invited me on a Tuesday night shop ride.

2 minutes from my house so I’m really happy as I don’t know any trails/routes around here at all.

banks – never had that experience ever. Jon knows his stuff and gets on with things.
