  • Bike shops in Cambridge that sell MTB wheels?

My daughter had the front wheel nicked off her MTB over the holidays (was in a shared bike shed) and is struggling to find a shop that sells MTB wheels as all the places she has been to sell road or town type bikes.  She’s even had a go at ordering stuff online but it turns out that all the bolt/centrelock/QR/maxle/width/etc combinations can be a bit confusing if you are just starting to have to deal with this stuff.

It’s easy enough to get something ordered of course but I was wondering if anyone here knows of a bike shop in cambridge that is likely to sell a cheap front wheel?  Doesn’t need to be fancy as this isn’t her ‘proper’ mtb, it’s an old one that is a bit small but good enough for getting around on.  The wheel is 27.5.  I’m more interested in finding an mtb shop in Cambridge than solving the wheel issue

    thanks

Not lived there for a while, so my knowledge probably out of date, but I believe there’s a Decathlon now

    Decathalon?

A decathlon would be perfect if there was one.  I’ll take a look.  I had seen that wheel as is probably what I’ll order anyway.  They just don’t appear to have rotor bolts so I’ll have to get those elsewhere

edit: there is a Decathlon which is fab but it doesn’t have the MTB stuff. (I can order it to be delivered of course but then I can order something direct as well – this may be due to the lack of mountains nearby)

You’ll need a disc? They generally come with rotor bolts.

Ah, that would be perfect.  Haven’t bought a disc in ages now so I didn’t remember.  That would solve that problem.  She should be fine sticking it all together.  Thanks

There’s a Rutland cycling on Barnwell road and a small Evans in the Grafton centre just up from the Decathlon store.
There’s also Townsends on Chesterton road and Primo cycles on Jesus lane, but I haven’t used either of them so they may not be any good.

If your daughter can get out of town at all C6 bikes are a MTB specialist just off the A10 near Waterbeach. They’re good guys and are helpful over Facebook if you/she want to check if they can help at all.

I haven’t been able to use them since they moved out of town, but Bicycle Ambulance were always great whatever I threw at them – I think they said mine was the first fat bike they’d worked on for example, but like everything else they did it came back working much better than when it went in.

It does sound like there isn’t anything in town.  I took a look at the website of Rutland and Evans and again no mtb stuff.  Gettting out of town isn’t easy either.  It’s not a problem to order something though, was just wondering if I was missing somewhere obvious in Cambridge itself

    thanks again all

Discs are what triathletes and TTers have on their bikes so don’t ask for a disc wheel, I think you mean rotors 😉

Rutland (barnwell) and Evans definitely have MTB stuff, or Halfords and decathlon. All of which will be able to order something.

C6 other side of waterbeach or Pheonix cycleworks in Newmarket if she can drive (high end stuff though) are dedicated MTB shops.

Bike ambulance can also likely sort out what she needs.

Actually, the light blue is also a good possibility, they build wheels (as does bike ambulance).

Thanks.  Rutland/Evans/Halfords online were showing no wheels at their shops.  I’ll take a look at the sites of the others but she doesn’t drive so ordering online is looking like the best option now.  Just need a bog standard wheel rather than anything fancy as the wheel is likely to go again and it isn’t her offroad bike really any more

    thanks though, appreciated

If she needs a hand fitting it \ tyres, I’m top of Newmarket road\ditton lane and on the west campus most days.

@scuffythefirst – that’s a brilliant offer, thanks.  I’m kind of hopeful that all should be fine but I’ll drop you a message if it gets messy.

Not sure if Paul (Stripe) is still working on bikes (hope he is), but he was relatively close to Cambridge on the A428 and might be able to help her.

Thanks.  I’ve found exactly the same wheel as she had originally on the bike online now so I’ll order that as it will save any risk of having to mess around with moving the caliper.  I doubt that would be a problem but one less thing to do is fine

Hoo Koo E koo – blast from the past.  Unfortunately Google maps says permanently closed and last review was 6 years ago :(.

Good to know tx.  I suspect he would have  been able to supply something but it’s done now.  He didn’t appear in any of my google map searches though, I wonder why.  His facebook page looks like he’s been around for a while 🙁

    @winston

Does Ben Haywards on Trumpington Street

Long gone I’m afraid. Quite a few bike shops have gone recently.
