I know the guys from GRVL and have one of their jerseys. Very well made and top quality materials. I know they’ve extensively tested the shorts on riders who do guiding for Hotchillie (London Paris off road etc). I also know the designers have worked on some big name cycling kit companies so even though they are relatively new there’s pedigree behind the brand.
I bought a pair of the Aussie Grit 2-in-1 shorts but they’re unavailable now. They’re OK but I tend to just go with lycra and forego baggies on the gravel bike most days.
I’ve always worn baggies over bibs be it MTB/road/gravel (not even “bike” ones, just cheapo wicking ones) and never had a problem with them slipping down 🤔 There’s this new thing you get can, called a belt…
^^ yeah, Aussie grit, they were really good, but I wore them to death, had 2 pairs, went in the bin last summer eventually. Will see how the GRVL ones shape up, there is 10% off for first purchase so still spendy, but a little less so.
I have always worn baggies over bib shorts on MTB, and tend to do so much of the time on gravel bike, and yes, a belt does help 🙂
Didn’t Pas Normal Studio have the letters P.N.S snitched across the back of their shorts? I’m amazed that no one in the marketing dept. wasn’t like “Erm…these letters…”
Would that be Aussie Grit? the stuff I got was superb but is now starting to show it’s age a lot . I wish I had bought more
Same here! I think my Ignite 2 in 1’s are my most worn short for XC / gravel stuff. Starting to get a little tired now so will check out the suggestions above.
I’ll sometimes wear splash/waterproof baggies to reduce the wet arse syndrome, though I’ve found the Win Wing mudguard seems to do that job rather well.
One advantage of separate baggies is that I can take them off if they’re muddy and I’m sitting in a cafe/pub.
what advantage does a pair of ‘baggy’ shorts this tight bring to the party?
Some people, including myself, hate super baggy shorts. They snag on things, have an excess of pockets and zips and the crotch gets caught on the saddle. Plus I like to show off my god-like cyclist thighs 😂
I’ve a pair of Assos baggy/non baggy shorts and love them.

Ditto, and available still on the assos website for £50 if you’re XL in stature. I’d go so far as to say I prefer them to the Aussie Grit baggies which are a bit too baggy for my taste.
^^^ and with 10% off, about £165, so about same price as Endura Pro SL bib tights, Endura GV500 etc, seems to be close to the going rate for good quality bib shorts.
It’s a shame Galibier don’t do something similar, yet, as they seem to be able to offer really good quality kit and significantly lower prices
Does seem strange to have bibs with sewn in baggies. Those GRVL ones look nice, but I’m struggling to see the point. Surely it’s all a bit limiting? I have about 5 pairs of bib shorts, in various states of wear and tear, and a couple of pairs of close fitting MTB shorts. I like being able to wear the bibs on their own (road ride, hot day, etc) or to put some shorts over the top (MTB, cooler day, etc).
Price of the GRVL ones is OK, you’d pay that for just a pair of good quality bib shorts (albeit those brands would have well recognised pedigree).

As the OP says, there’s the chance the baggies will slide down. I guess it depends on how well defined your waist is and whether your shorts go around your stomach or under it.
I did have a pair of Endura MTR bibshorts which had a “cats tongue” panel at the back which worked with matching MTR baggies to avoid slippage. Also, the MTR baggies I’m wearing at this moment have a sticky rubber panel on the inside of the waist at the rear.

Agreed – a few shorts have them – my Endura’s and Northwave, a couple of pairs of Scott ones in the house. Even some of them are not ‘deliberate’, but have soft waistband such as mrs_oab’s Polaris 3/4 ‘baggies’ which stick well.
Mrs_oab has a couple of pairs of the Scott sewn together liner and baggies (not ‘not-baggies’) – hers were £5 a pair in a silly sale. They are the most comfy liners she has next to the Bontragers, but are short in length and very lightweight so only get used on really hot days. Quality kit.
It has always been completey beyond me why cycling shorts are made with pockets. When your legs are pedalling why would you want anything in a pocket, or why would you put something in such a great place to fall on and damage either that item or yourself?
I have two pairs of Gore shorts that are a similar concept of a light short (running short weight) sewn over the bib. I don’t know if they still make them. I use them a lot for warm-ish rides to spare my and everyone else’s blushes.
I was a huge skeptic about bibs with pockets until I was sent some to try. Now in warm weather they are my favourite to wear when wearing with a t shirt or shirt without pockets. Phone in one side, snacks or cap in the other for minimal kit riding. I’d not do it on the MTB though, I fall off too much. On the grav it’s great
Well they arrived today, and jolly nice they are too 👌.
The baggy short is very minimalist and much lighter than the old ones I had, and there aren’t any pockets in the overshorts, but a couple of decent ones in the upper lumbar area. The bib shorts and the straps appear very well made and finished, and a test wear in the house says they are extremely comfortable, at least on par with my Rapha cargo ones, so I am delighted with the purchase so far.
