Rock… Prog rock, metal, r&b, where do you start? The Who are one of the best rock bands I’ve seen live and they were mods, not rockers! The likes of Sabbath, Purple, Humble Pie, Uriah Heap, were laying down the foundations for the 70s/80s rockers like G&R, AC/DC, etc.

Best? Depends on what halluciegenics you were on at a moment in time… 8) But Led Zep are right up there.

Led Zep? Sorry, I don’t wear one of those suit jackets with leather elbows and I’m not a geography teacher 😀

I’m surprised they are mentioned more than Sabbath, but I guess this is STW 😉

I think there’s a good clue in a just a few of the many songs with Rock in the title… (let alone the mention of Rock in songs, of which there are loads)

    Let there be Rock
Rock n Roll aint noise pollution
Rock n Roll Damnation (a defo fav of mine)
    Rock n Roll train
    Rock n Roll Dream
    Hard as Rock
    Rock n roll singer
    Rocker

And of course last but not least

    For those about to Rock

It’s ACDC for me … pure “Rock”… not metal, not punk, not verging on prog rock like sone of Led Zep … and certainly no ballads.

    Just ROCK

I love ’em, but grindcore isn’t “rock” by any stretch of the imagination.

    As musicians? Rush
    As a live band? Thunder
As the epitome of what RAWK and ROLL is all about? G ‘n R.

Basically, mogrim, all you like is 12-bar blues, anything more complicated than that is
pretentious tedious crap loved by musos. Awful, awful rubbish, only outdone by Pink Floyd.

    🙂

I like complicated music too. But not complicated for complicated’s sake.

Most of us, on the other hand, can cope with, and appreciate a wider variety in our music. And are old enough to remember how much of a revelation Zeppelin were at the time.
Nobody’s mentioned the Pixies yet, or Mudhoney, or Pavement. Or Screaming Trees; now there’s a bloke with an awesome rock/blues voice!

Zeppelin may have been a revelation at the time, but having been subjected to their music at various times, usually by wannabe guitar players, I can safely say it’s dull. It hasn’t aged well. The Pixies, however, are a different matter. But somehow I don’t think of them as a “rock” band, it’s an image thing: they seem to lack the alcohol-fuelled-throw-the-tv-out-the-hotel-window style that a true rock band should have. Which is why I didn’t mention them.

And yes, this is all subjective opinion. It’s right though 🙂

    that’s because they’re an indie band 😀

Yeah, that’s sort of what I meant. But why are they indie (alt-rock, whatever) and Faith No More are clearly rock? (And should have been mentioned earlier)?

genre innit. All based on music press/labelling, fan base and the tribalism of humanity.

considering that under the “best rock band” so far we’ve had:
    Rock
    glam
    death metal
    Industrial
    Goth
    punk
    post punk
    indie
    alt-rock
    grindcore
    grunge/sub-pop
    Heavy metal

oh and bilge (led zep) 😉

Jason and the Scorchers are a great rock n roll band and live they are exceptional.

Hanoi Rocks were staggering live but the albums were awful.

Metallica died after ..and justice for all IMO and have been on a downward trajectory ever since. St Anger anyone 😯

Nice list, though you’ve forgotten big-hair rock.

AKA – Poodle-perm rock, cock rock, glam-metal, hair rock etc.

    See the follwing as examples;

    Poison
    Mötley Crüe
    Cinderella
    Twisted Sister
    W.A.S.P.
    Warrant
    Europe
    The Quireboys
    etc
And, nu-skool cock rockers, Steel Panther

None should ever really be considered to be that good, I’d say! Great fun, but not in the “best” category. Unless it’s for services to spandex and hair spray. 🙂

compared to stuff like pigs in zen and mountain song, it was just meh..a sign of the downward spiral to things like porno for pyros. Strays had moments of greatness though.

Glam is different to big-hair rock

    T-rex and Bowie were glam

Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Ratt etc.. were big-hair rock 8)

    Def Leppard, Bon Jovi,

noooo they were fribber rock, for sweaty blokes in blue denim with bad fringes.

But yes there was 70’s Glam and Glam-Rock in the 80’s wouldn’t use the phrase “cock rock” as smashed gladys were amazing and had a girly singer 😀

No such thing as a “best” band. All of them influence each other, all of them would probably cringe at the thought of being best.

Tbh when I turn the volume up and just jam away, I’m the “best”… It’s all about just giving it some. LOL

I always find that people who accept the subjectivity of art tend to be the least repressed, very open minded and generally the most fun to be around.
Very difficult to wind up though.

Paige will be consistently ranked above Hammett on a top guitarist list
Nothing worse than musicians discussing music – once they’ve done their bit they should all be locked away ’till next time.
Their opinion is less than relevant, it’s in fact positively harmful.
Most of them have become brainwashed by the technicalities of their craft and forgotten how or why they enjoyed music in the first place.
    1.I meant fans not musicians
    2. you are free to ignore the experts in this area as you are in any field
    3. You seem to have failed to accept the subjectivity of art with your less than tolerant views of those who actually create it

See if you are livid yet or laughing 😉

Smashing Pumpkins! (I’m clearly born of a different era to most of STW, but I’m right!) Edit: I do wish they’d stop releasing awful new stuff though, weakens my argument a lot!

Also, Foo Fighters died for me the day I saw them get blown away by Queens of the Stoneage live in Hyde Park, not even that big a Queens fan but they were amazing and I could have happily left in the middle of the Foos.

Can’t better Tales of Brave Ulysses. Always loved the chemistry of a good combo when talking about rock bands. Keyboards don’t count sorry! Something about vocalists that play bass, a drummer and one guitarist. Raw and simple. Keep it simple is the way .

The Kinks started it with You Really Got Me, then maybe McCartney (yes, really) with The Beatles Helter Skelter. The Yardbirds –> Led Zep at about same time as Deep Purple and B’ham blues band Black Sabbath. My first singles were Paranoid (Sabbath) and Black Night (Purple).
