Noticing that some bike companies list the geometry with BB Offset - tried searching the net but not found anything that makes me any clearer on what it is and what effect differing offset's have on a bikes performance.
Does anyone here hold the knowledge which can explain this?
BB offset, could be referring to "drop" which is the distance the BB sits below the wheel centres. A larger drop means a lower BB (generally), though on trials bikes, it's the other way round as they like to (now) sit above wheel centre.
To determine BB height from a "drop" figure, you need to subtract drop from the radius (half the diameter) of your wheels.
Therefore, BB height can be ascertained for a specific tyre size, rather than a more vague figure.
Cheers Brant - think I get it. How does it affect the ride of a bike?
BB height/drop will obviously affect ground clearance (so you want it nice and high) but will also affect the centre of gravity (so you want it nice and low) 🙂
So if I know the BB height - does offset mean anything or is it just a useless measurement?
