I’ve got an old Stumpy that I use on the road – it has/had a Shimano BB-ES30 68 by 113 Bottom Bracket (BC 1.37 24) with Octalink / splined cranks – think it’s this one: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/282689291229

However what I thought was play in the BB was actually play between the frame and the BB – the drive side has worn away the frame’s BB thread (the thread is still visible, but the tube feels slightly tapered on the inside and the BB won’t tighten, just pulls out).

Am I right in thinking I can fit a press fit BB? And if so, which model / size am I looking for?

    Thanks in advance!

Just realised I’m being an idiot over the octalink / press fit thing, just realised they’re different systems.  I’ve also got some Shimano FC-M660 SLX triples I believe similar to these: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Shimano-FC-M660-Crankset-175mm-44-32-22/dp/B001GSMMME

Any idea if a press fit BB would fit my frame, (e.g. does this system need threads, it’s been a long time since I fitted one) and if so which size (previous was 68 by 113)?

If your frame is threaded then you’ll need a threaded bottom bracket. If you plan on using your M660 cranks then a shimano HTII BB will be one to go for in whatever flavour of expense you choose. I doubt you’d be able to use a press fit BB as the frame is not designed for it.  It the threads are shot as per your OP then I would get it checked by a competent bike shop to see whether or not it can be saved. Good luck

You definitely can’t use a press fit BB in that frame.

But as Alan says, a bike shop might be able to tap it and sort the threads out.

Failing that, and as a last resort I have used one of these –

It is a bit of a bodge, but it did work. And would fit the SLX chainset that you linked too above.

Press fit is the wrong terminology and standard here, so drop that.

You’ll not get anything to work with an Octalink chainset unless you can fix the BB threads and use a regular Octalink BB.

Similar to @jhpbk’s suggestion, you could also get a square taper crank and fit something similar to this:

A friend of mine used a BB similar to the above (not sure of the exact brand) for years on a Surly with knackered BB threads.

Thanks for your help guys, I really appreciate your help!

I’ll look into the options and price it up – I love the bike but it’s a 22(ish) year old frame, so might be easiest just to pick up a cheap second hand frame and transfer everything over.

My own fault for assuming the play was in the chainrings and not the bottom bracket..

I would try the collar from a new/nearly new square taper/octalink bb in the frame. The majority of the wear might be in the old collar? If it’s a tightish fit then it’s perhaps worth trying a replacement bb and use some high strength threadlock. I’ve probably got a square taper bb and a basic Shimano triple chainset (new) that you can have for nothing if it’s any good to you. Direct message me if that might help, I’m away until Sunday though

Thanks so much for the offer wheelsonfire1 – it’s really generous of you 🙂  I’ve had a better look at the frame and think sadly the only option of salvaging it will be one of those threadless bottom brackets linked above – you can feel the difference between the two sides of the inside of the bottom bracket tube – my lack of mechanics has worn away around 2mm all the way around the inside of the frame, and the current BB (the thread of which looks fine) can basically be pulled out of the frame!

I really appreciate the offer though, it’s very kind of you, so thank you anyway  🙂
