Hi all, been trying to find a new brake system and spoke to crc and they are telling me to go to avids after i said i would like shimano.

they said they are much better than previous years but they dont have a complete set in stock…

youll need to budget fo the avid bleed kit too, thats the only advantge they have over shimano imho – they are piss easy to bleed rock solid, whereas shimano's are more like fairground donkeys to bleed

the 3's are ok, but altogher a bit lack lustre, and the calipers are not up to deore build qualiy

hmm…. well im after 185mm front and 160mm rear.

with a budget of about £100 for my first bike… seen nice deores but not as a set or 1 model in 1 and another in another and i want a complete set….

    any ideas?

    New Jucies are really good.
Same caliper as the much more expensive louise, good power and magura reliablity.
The lever shape is also improved on the old versions.

Overall a great brake for the money. Not quite the same level of feel as some other brakes, but much cheaper.

Just be careful not to strip the hose thread at the lever end when cutting the hoses down – it's plastic and thus doesn't take kindly to over tightening….

p.s. I'd buy the Julies over any avid brakes any day.

will i need to purchase a mount adaptor going from my 160mm to the 180mm or should it come in the box?

160 will be plenty on the rear, I'd have thought – depends how much you weigh and the type of riding you will be doing in the Alps, really.

I'm about 12 stone & my 185/160 Juicy 7's were fine for the mountains of Spain, but I take things fairly steady.

Have you looked on the Merlin website for deals? I got my Juicy 7's reduced to £135 from £270 because of a scratch on the reservoir!

If you're in the Alps, I'd ditch both the Avids and the Julies and get find yourself some Hayes 9's. Very cheap, bombproof, loads of power, no hassles with heat generation (Avids are hopeless when they get hot).
