Are you after data to establish an average or guesses as to what is the average?

    Mine are
    XC – Rockhopper – 60mm
    Trail – Meta 5 – 50mm

    On mine…

    Yeti 575 – 60mm Stem

    Orange P7 – 60mm Stem

Road bike (commuter) – 120mm Stem

just guesses as to what is the average.

Long winded version – my flux has a long 100mm stem which is great for climbing but not so confindence inspiring on techical/descents. plus I have narrow flats.

basically I’m trying to figure out what length to go for 😆

I had a rocklobster which had a TT of 22.75. I was told this is short so I tried a 100mm stem (which is now on my Turner flux)

the flux has a similar TT length of 23.3.

Can’t believe no ones using 130mm stems any more, its the way forward.

    Do I get an insult?

    Better answer, to longer question:
IMHO it’s more about overall position than a single component like stem.
Personally, I think bar width made more difference to me.

    eg
Two pics taken on the same day, coincidentally taken at EXACTLY the same point on the trail but on two different bikes.
When I saw these, I bought a bit shorter stem/much wider bars. Loads better now. 😀 😀
Only problem then was that my other bike, the Rockhopper, now felt crap down hills so I ended up putting the 60mm stem on that. 🙂

    1. Meta 5 at 60mm with maybe 670mm-ish bars

    2. Borrowed mmmbop at 50mm with 745mm bars

Long winded? It’s 3 lines FFS. Can we just pretend that your thread starts there, when it’s marginally more sensible. Only marginal though, if 100mm is too long, try a shorter one.

    For me: MTB has 100
Both road bikes have 90, although going to try 100.

    calm down bloody hell 🙄

yeah I need to go shorter 90, 80, 70, 60mm? I’ll choose one but I’d like to make the best decision and not have to purchase more than one to find the right fit.

    XC bike/Trail bike/AM bike/DH bike/Jump bike all have a 60mm stem.

    Road bike – 110mm

Craig, the Meta originally came with a 90mm stem (which I swapped for a 60mm) and the 670ish bars in the pic.
Me, 6’2″ but all arms and legs.

[EDIT] want to borrow a 60mm or 90mm to try? Both are O/S [/EDIT]

To be sensible, I would say narrow flats are more likely to be hindering your confidence than the stem. You may want a shorter stem with wider bars though, to keep the reach the same. Height of bars also affects reach. So wider, riser bars, may not feel much more stretched?

How do you find the reach at the moment?

    sefton

I feel ok on the stretch, this is me (with hands on bar ends – very steep too) my bars are 600mm

Ian – yeah possibly (my current set-up is all 25.4)

600mm bars! No wonder, I’d try wider bars, then shorten the stem to get the reach right. I know the trend is silly wide bars, but even a couple cm more would make a difference I’d think (and that’s what she said ;-))

If you’d asked for tt length, stem length and bar width you’d have been able to approximately calculate the reach to the grips.
    Now there’s something worth knowing

    I’m 5’8″ ride the following:
    yeti 575 medium, 110mm stem
Carbon 456 medium, 100mm stem (feels short)
    Ritchey P20 18″, 120mm stem

So not average, does that make me special? 😉

My XC/XC Race bike was 100mm with 610mm bars

Trance; 70mm stem / 680mm risers. Bike felt just awful on original long stem. Just gone to 680 from 630. Wouldn’t want wider ( don’t think), but this feels much better for chucking the bike about on local narrow s/track.

    xc/trail 40mm

think I’ll get a low riser 15mm 710wide and cut down if needed.

stem – is a 38mm stack height small? I currently have these http://www.xcracer.com/shop/viewproduct.php?productid=36 but they are for weight weenies (so I guess they have a low stack height) – I’d like to get rid of some of the extra steerer tube without getting the saw out!

Easton do their decent flat bars in 685mm now, if you want to keep the bar ends and remain socially acceptable?

    sefton

they might not look too bad with risers 😳
