Hi,

ive got a chance of getting an 2002 berlingo 2l hdi from a mate for £250 but he reckons the fuel pump is knackered but it still drives but produces alot of smoke? what might be wrong with it? and how much would it cost to fix?

Cheers Tom

What colour of smoke, and is it lacking power/hesitating?
Also, any warning lights on?

Fuel pump is highly unlikely to cause excess smoke on one of these.

If you're sure it's white smoke, and not blue, then it's most likely an injector problem.
White smoke is normally caused by fuel timing/quantity issues, which is all down to the injectors on an hdi. Any competent diesel mechanic should be able to do a injector leak back test to identify the faulty injector.

Cost wise, injector reconditioning is anything from £70 per injector, or about £120+ for exchange.
