    Geltlemen, please can you help?

I’m 47 years young and quite fancy a pair of converse. (Just black ones, nothing colourful) But my fifteen year old daughter has forbidden me making the purchase on the grounds of my age. I have mates my age who wear them but they are in bands which seems to make it ok in her eyes.
    Should I…
    1. Ignore her and buy a pair and be in danger of looking a t**t.
    2. Take her advice.
    3. Learn to play the gutar and join a band

    Thanks

    Flossie,

    Buy them.

I am also 47 years of age and currently wearing converse.

I have 5 pairs. One black, one red, one grey, one maroon, and a pair of black lo tops.

    🙂

45 here and have a few pairs of converse.

Only the shoes though, not the hi tops
And when I’m as old as you I definitely won’t wear them! 😉

41 and have a pair don’t wear them as they’re uncomfortable as hell.

Could be worse you could be wanting a pair of Flossies.

41-and-a-quarter and I still have Converse. We all dress like teenagers these days you know 🙂

Although I was once advised if you remember clothes from the first time around you shouldn’t be wearing them second time round…

    Yup.

Surely “to embarrass your kids” is a compelling reason to get them?

    Buy some.
    🙂

Or if you’ve got wider feet and/or aren’t flat footed, get some Vans.
Cheaper and waaaaay better looking, imo.

    20-30 = Converse
    30-40 = Merrells/Vans

    Flossette,

Think yourself lucky he’s not looking for a pair of comedy socks and some nice sandals. Or Vibram FiveFingers.

With teenage daughter’s approval, I bought a pair of the totally black ones (the ones with the black rubber logo & toe-caps). I’d always wanted a pair of those.

They’re not comfy, and I look ridiculous in them. Size 9 1/2. Worn maybe 4 times. £10 each, or £17.50 for both. Make me an offer.

    You’re selling your shoes individually?

Plimsoles were shit when I was doing PE in vest and pants.
A five point star doesn’t change matters.
You may as well man-up, go the whole hog and get some silver shadows.

of course you are not. The most important question is do you have narrow enough feet for Converse. I’m 47 and get my kids cast offs because their feet are now wider than my D-width stick feet.

Vans are where it’s at, apparently.

I am surprised nobody has suggested the “c” word yet. Threatening to wear “those that shall not be mentioned” is probably the easiest way to get your daughter to sign-off on the Cons/vans…. or (frankly) anything else.

I have been wearing cons and vans all my life,48. Due to age I just switched shoes to some 5 10 dirt bags. Should arrive by the weekend what what.

The day I start caring about what other people’s opinions are about what I wear is the day I am old. 38 and I have owned one pair of “proper” shoes in the last 10 years. 😀

I wore converse as a kid, I now wear the £10/20 pound knock of versions.

David Cameron wears Converse so for that reason alone no one should wear them

I used to have a pair but lost them somewhere. Must go on a hunt, I think they’re in the tardis cupboard under the stairs.

The converse weren’t an issue, it was when I put a pair of the wife’s ‘jeggings’ on as well to look like a hipster that the kids forbade me leaving the house. I was never going to…… but then again we will never use nuclear weapons either. Simply knowing that they exist (the converse / jeggings / band T-shirt outfit) makes them fear what I could do to them if I had to, and that’s enough.

Thankfully, no pics exist, the wife was crying with laughter and couldn’t find a camera in time.

    (Nearly 46 BTW)

But then and prove to her, when it comes to personal style, some one else’s opinion means nothing at all.

I think you can get more comfortable, better stuff for the same money, but depends if you want to be one of the kidz or not

The answer is ‘yes’ if you feel the need to ask. You shall wear your teenage fashion fetish with the mien of the desperate and insecure. You shall openly invite silent yet crushing opprobium from strangers and family alike. Those furtive glances at your feet-folly are not the admiring kind. They are the same kind that peek at a leather blouson, or a white sock and loafer. Try brogues and cargo shorts?

say you’re really keen for the bright yellow rubber ones, she’ll probably compromise with the trad plain white and consider it a minor victory.

You’re never too old to wear Converse! 🙄
Just bought myself some new orange ones this summer.
(I’m 43 – not that that makes any difference.)
My 16 year old way-stylish daughter is more than happy to be seen out with me in them! 8)
