  • AIBU – Impending Farcebook cull

STW / Mumsnet advice sought please.

I’m about to pull the trigger on a Farcebook cull of “friends”. I’m sick of seeing Britain First / Lionheart GB / EDL (not the dancing ones) posts shared and liked by so called friends. Amongst the offenders are family members, in fariness some of the shared posts are concerning the poppy appeal, which if the raised funds went to the Royal British Legion and on to ex-service personel I wouldn’t have a problem with.

I have given everyone a warning that the cull is imminent, I’ve linked some info about who these groups are to older relatives who might not be aware, but still the post keep coming.

AIBU to cull them? I know I should just walk away from Farcebook, but rides are organised through some of the groups I “liked”.

Piss taking is throughly encouraged BTW. 😉 And I know the rant score will be low.

You can’t call it Farcebook if you use it.

Drop ’em like hot rocks. I have a zero tolerance policy for anyone who propagates that stuff on social media.
I recently broke all contact with a woman who ive been friends with for 25+yrs because she is a religious zealot who, after starting a public discussion on why people don’t go to church reacted with personal insults after I took care to avoid being personal about her particular faith & stuck to explaining why I didn’t believe – I felt the full force of her brand of ‘christian love’.
    Ergo she is past history.

You could always just unfollow them. That way they’re still your friends but you don’t see what they post/share.

I think that a lot of the people who “like” Britain First” stuff on FB are just blindly “liking” it without looking properly or realising what Britain First actually is.

Hmmm…..’I’m not friends with you because you believe in something that I don’t’

    ?????

Doesn’t that make you as bad as them?

This did the rounds on facebook recently to try and stem these posts a bit: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/history/world-war-one/11207973/The-loathsome-Britain-First-are-trying-to-hijack-the-poppy-dont-let-them.html

I haven’t seen any recently. As above I tend to hide posters rather than unfriending. Partly because they have no idea and it stops then refriending. There is loads of control as a facebook user so there is hardly any need to see things you don’t want to.

Just bin ’em. I have no mercy either. I’ve just bought a new car that cost a considerable sum of money. First thing some ‘friend’ posts on a picture of it? “I wouldn’t drive that POS if you paid me.”. Fair enough, it might not be to his taste, but ‘if you can’t be nice, keep quiet’. Binned.

Also zero tolerance for BF, EDL stuff family or not. I can’t bring myself to bin my Mum for posting Daily Mail links mind you 🙂

I have a Facebook account almost entirely made up of people I used to know, but have never remained in touch with. Ive dithered over a cull.

I’m a Twitter user and am conscious it’s really easy to create unchallenged positive feedback loops by following people/organisations with whom I comfortably identify. But that’s not altogether helpful.

You’d be as well to counter views you find distasteful rather than allowing them to go unchecked. If that doesn’t work (after some effort), then cull with impunity.

Depends what they believe in surely? If they spout EDL crap all the time, how does un-friending them on Facebook make you as bad as them?

I got fed up of the shite talk on Facebook, so binned it. My riding group use whatsapp, much easier.

Ruthless cull is looking most favourable.

I’ve tried to counter the posts with links to news articles, Wikipedia etc. It just seems to fall on deaf ears. Most won’t engage in a discussion, just repeatedly post more prejudiced crap.

    esselgruntfuttock

Yes, they may have a different view to me, but when some of these so called friends add their own vile opinions onto the posts am I to turn the cheek and put it down to difference of opinion? The comments are so far over the line, they are inciting violence and racial hatred.

    Bin em.
I have blocked almost as many people on facebook as i have friends, im on it to keep in touch with friends, not to listen to a random “friend of a friend of a friend” going on about something or other.
I wouldn’t put up with hate speech in person, fb is no different.

Facebook really is a load of shit. If it’s not adverts its just an excuse for people to get of their chest what they know they couldn’t say in public without getting a punch in the face, or an excuse to make everyone believe your life is so much more interesting and fabulous than everyone else’s

Facebook ………. an excuse to make everyone believe your life is so much more interesting and fabulous than everyone

Really! I’ve found the opposite with many ‘friends’ and can’t believe the banal shit they post. Makes my dull little life seen quite thrilling by comparison!

As per above, I don’t unfriend EDL etc. posters, it’s easier to unfollow.

As above, there seems to be less BF stuff these days. I did respond to mates who reposted the loyalty posts pointing out how abhorrent they were (to me) and TBF haven’t seen much recently – at all.

Facebook has been quite useful for propagating family information, having minor rants, pictures from recent spins – bit like STW…

My rule is that people I’d not call a proper, real friend in real life is an acquaintance on FB and anyone who is a friend in real life but has a tendency to post drivel gets to join them. It does mean I only get a handful of posts in my newsfeed everyday and that’s fine my me.

I also refuse all friend requests from anyone I work with. Never does to mix the two; I’ve seen some classic cock ups with people bitching about work before realising the people they are bitching about can actually read it.

Hold your horses, don’t burn bridges! You never know when having all those contacts will come in handy. Yes, you might have them all in your phone book but for all sorts of other reasons you might be glad you kept them on FB. Just hide them away and pretend you read and listen.. for the time being.

I’ve seen a few folk start up in business and I think, for something that’s free, has helped them nicely.

I closed my farcebook account over a year ago.

But I did reactivate it a couple of months back just to unfriend a work colleague after he showed me some shite video on his page (on his phone) and I spotted some real dodgy ‘likes’. Then promptly deactivated it again… :huh?:

    So I’d say: bin ’em.

My missus insiated I added every one of her family as friends on facebook.

Got to the point when I stopped ignoring the worst of them and responded to “I do t know why you put up with him and his cycling” (posted while i was in hospital after a crash) with “if one more fat person (shes in the barely moving category and serves lasagne and fish pie as sides at the annual BBQ) would like to comment on sporting activities I’m going to commemt on theirs”.

I was told “your brave showing up here” at said BBQ, which is wierd as i thought I was there under duress.

Unfriend your friends , close your account, learn to hack so you can remove all trace you ever existed on the Facebook servers (shouldn’t be too difficult they are always having security issues), take a pick axe to your PC and then have a shower. You will feel much better.

A lesson I learned far too late in life is that life is too short to spend it in the company of arseholes.

A chunk of my FB “friends” are people I went to school with and haven’t spoken to since, ex-colleagues, folk I’ve met once… Some, to be fair, have turned out to be quite interesting, but I’ve been threatening to purge a good chunk for a while now. I’ve been struggling to define a good criteria, but “do I actually know you” is probably going to be the yardstick.

Have I spoken on the phone to you in the last 12 months or seen you in person.

I don’t unfriend people, but I’m pretty ruthless with the unfollow option.
I reckon I’ve unfollowed about 95% of my friends for such infractions as posting pictures of their baby, telling me how drunk they got last night, any reference to football, etc.
I’ve never understood why people complain about what they get in their newsfeed. If you don’t like it, hide it.

I bin off people who spout limp wristed liberal/leftie/socialist/communist nonsense.
Remain friends with people you like and are similar to, its a bit tragic to threaten to unfriend people though.

Facebook, like most internet interaction has the effect of amplifying undesirable traits. If someone’s a bit of a bullshitter, then they will be insuferable on facebook. If they are bit thick, it’ll seem like they total brain dead idiots.

The other problem with Facebook is that for some people it’s their main experience, or only experience of interacting with people online. So they have no idea of what’s acceptable and what’s not. For a geek like me who’s been online for 20 years or so I can kind of moderate my internal extremist, others seem to want to accentuate theirs like a teenager on msn for the first time.

Does that mean your friends consist only of stiff wristed, right wing, authoritarian fascists? You sound like a real man. A real…internet hard man. Like Charles Bronson on a keyboard, man.

If there’s one thing EDL and the like do well, it’s social media.

They spread their propaganda by posting innocent looking patriotic pictures (such as the one above), which innocent patriotic people like/share.

But some of it is just racist…in which case, no excuse.

    kimbers

I keep the ones I disagree with politically, if only so I can argue with them- marky29er would’ve deleted me by now, and anyone posting edl/ Britain 1st shit gets shown the error of their ways, until until they stop posting it or I unfrirnd them.
Which I’m sure leaves them sobbing over their copies of the DM the next morning when they realise 😉

I don’t really think a lot of people have ‘got’ social media yet….

    and the concept of spam….

TBH if you have a fear of other people having a different opinion of yours
    that probably worse then anyhing.
