Is there a rule of thumb? Setting up a road bike and it’s got about an inch of wobble in the middle if I press on the chain. Doesn’t sag on top or bottom.
    Thanks

    sounds ok.
if there is too much tension you will get “binding” with the cranks.
ie when you lifte and spin the rear wheel forwards – the cranks will also spin.

Don’t get your thumb caught when you spin the crank. That’s my rule.

The other one is to make sure it’s tight enough to prevent it from coming off easily if you push it off the chainring as you turn it slowly.

Seen some really loose ones….. as wot John said, as long as it wont easily come off. I try and keep mine fairly tight.
