We’ve got 1 car with CarPlay, and 1 without. Both of us are fans of CarPlay but until today I’d never considered a simple add-onscreen like this https://amzn.eu/d/hUsB45D

Various options available, but has anyone tried one? And was it any good? I would hope that they’re simple enough devices to not be garbage, but also would be surprised if they were somehow crap

I bought one of those double din CarPlay Chinese stereos from amazon. atoto f7 I think. it’s been faultless. really really good in our ducata Moho.

Can’t help with the op exactly but the Atoto double din units do look really good and seem to do well in reviews. Loads of stuff on YouTube about them.

I’m planning to put one in my next banger.

That stand alone unit you linked to OP. Is there any way it links in with your car other than Bluetooth? Surely just as easy to use your phone with a screen mount or cradle?

Anyone got a link to one of the cheap double-DIN units which they know is good?

I’m looking for our van.. Seems that between good ones there are a few really shonky ones.

Going in T5, Apple and Android, ideally wireless connection and DAB. Needs a reasonable sound quality.

I’ve had one of these from this seller for a year or so. It’s been bang on and actually more reliable than my composite media player was. Just need the correct shape for your dash.

For clarification – not double din. Currently it’s a (rubbish) integrated into the dash type setup

Never tried one but being Amazon you could order and try it. If it’s rubbish return it.

Only issue I can think of is the steering wheel buttons (if you have them) probably won’t work with it.

Ones (in dash) I’ve seen have the harness that means the reversing camera, steering wheel buttons and stuff all work. Some are programmable too, so if you don’t use a button, you can assign a different function to it.

Our car is one year too old to get the carplay and android auto head unit. I do miss it if I rent a car that has it, but not quite enough to pull the dash apart.

I tried an in-dash android unit. Sent it back…it’s basically a very cheap tablet will all the distracting/non-driving friendly apps menus and notifications.  The one I bought couldn’t even be locked so if it gets nicked your Google account and all saved passwords,  emails etc are accessible and on a known device so no 2 factor authentication etc.

I bought a Sony android auto unit which was the only proper after market one I could find that wasn’t designed for a lowered Vauxhall corsa with silly menus (Pioneer I’m looking at you)

I’ve not tried the standalone ones but I would be treat them with scepticism!
