Roy Hodgson, going to be a success or not?

No idea, I believe he was brought in to oversee a fire sale. Hicks has a history of selling assets to make himself money, so we will have to see what happens.

Saying that though, the last manager we had in his 60's that no-one really wanted or thought was up to the job was Bob Paisley… straws clutching…. yes

Roy Hodgson is a great manager who has shown at Fulham he has eyes for good cheap players, the sort that Liverpool will need to qualify for the Europa League this year, barring massive new investment Liverpool getting to the Champions League will not happen for a few years.

I personally think Liverpool need to sort themselves out off the pitch as they are in danger of becoming the next Newcastle, have to hope that fans realise that with the amount of donkey's Benetiz bought they are in real danger of finishing lower than last year & it's a potentially long & hard rebuilding road.

Billybob, you really need to think about what you type mate, if you think by getting rid of Rafa the club will turn itself around you are mistaken.

Removing Benitez is like treating someone with Terminal cancer for a splinter, the yanks need to be ousted first, google Tom Hicks and Corinthians if you think we are in good hands

Ryan Babbel? Lucas? Morientes? Gonzales? Keane? Bellamy? Dossena? Voronin?

I personally think Rafa was on borrowed time following the Champions League win & the season before lasts 2nd place.

But as I said they do need to sort themselves out off the pitch as there are 5-6 teams out there who have better squads this year, & that shouldn't happen.

Probably a good appointment but as said with the yanks there it's hard to see much changing.

Benitez record in the transfer market was positively shocking!! Torres was hardly an untried hidden gem and Benayoun was forced out, most of what he bought was shite!

Liverpool fans are fiercely loyal as they are the most knowledgeable without question, but Benitez was given too much loyalty IMO, Istanbul was great, if a little undeserved, but it was the league we wanted and with the players he has been buying, we are never going to win it. The only time he has looked decent was when the 'shackles came off' in the second half of the season when we were runners up, but then he reverted to over cautious type again last season and thets what happened. You need to be more dirtect to win the league and Benitez is just too cautious to win the league in this country.

Hodgson needs to start wheeling and dealing in the transfer market quick sharp as the new season starts in 20-odd days and the squad is no stronger than it was at the end of last season.

He's a good manager who has shown time and again he can put out a good team on limited funds and get results. My only concern is whether he can attract the big names to Liverpool (but maybe not so much of an issue right now as Liverpool can't really afford big names anyway). If Hodgson can get £30m for Gerrard and £35m for Torres, I think he should take it and use the money to rebuild the squad (if the owners allow him). Liverpool have relied on those 2 for too long, time to get some lesser players who will play for the team and the badge.

Rafa was/is still a good manager. His biggest mistake was selling Alonso and buying Aquilani.

For the record I think he'll improve in Benitez and there will be a much stronger team spirit which should see an improvement in form.

I think he should keep gerrard and play him just behind the front man but if someone wants to pay big money for Torres, ffs take it quick, let him keep someone elses treatment table warm.

Just hope he brings hengeland with him…

Ha ha ha ha , a journey man manger replacing some one so crap that he went to the European Champions, what crippled Benitez was battling the board for the final 2 years of his tenure, he was wrong in doing this, maybe if he had concentrated on the team and not the owners….. yet he could see what was happening with the club.

He is gone, but Hodgson doesn't come close to being as good as he is, in fact 3 years ago Liverpool were looking at Morinho and the like as a worthy successor, so we have Hodgson, brought in by money men running the club, one of which finalised the deal taking Benayoun to Chelsea, the issue woth that is that the guy behind the Benayoun deal is a Chelsea ST holder and big fan…. I feel for Hodgson, the club will improve when the Yanks go and not before, also if Torres goes, do you really believe Hodgson will see any of that money?

It'll be interesting to see which is the "little team" on Merseyside by the end of next season. Hodgson may well do better than expected, I have a feeling though that without the mediterranean glamour he won't satisfy a lot of reds fans.

I think Torres is an immense player when he's fit, but the problem is, Liverpool had no back up striker when Torres was out injured. Maybe this new Serbian striker they signed from Standard Liege will provide much needed cover. But if Man City or Chelski wanna pay silly money for Torres, maybe the time is right to let him go and buy 2 strikers to replace him. Darren Bent would be top of my list. And if Spurs still only want £10m for Pavlyuchenko, I think he would be worth a punt as well.

Again, Gerrard is an immense player, but I'm reading stories of Real Madrid being prepared to pay around £30m, which for a 30 year old would be good business for Liverpool.

Be interesting to see whether Aquilani can live up to Benitez's expectations this season as he is supposed to be 100% fit now. He didn't do much last season to get my hopes up though.

great manager but you dont have the players to really challenge for the title and with big spending city will be even harder to get back into Champions league.

Real have said that Liverpool are asking too much for a player of his age though, haven't they? It's all very well Liverpool having a price they'd like paid for him, but then they have to find someone willing to pay that much. Also sadly I couldn't see much of the £30m going anywhere except to pay off Gillette debts. I don't think Liverpool would be in a position to purchase a like for like player.

Oh I don't know. I'm sure Liverpool could find an overrated 30 year old costing 30m if they looked hard enough.

its a hard one to call, but my instinct says yes……………..as long as the ownership changes soon, and the the owners give Roy a chance.

I will be fully behind him, as he knows his stuff, he'll understand the club and fans, and if things are going wrong i can't see him being stubborn like benitez.
