  • 29er fork dilemma..

What I want is an X-Fusion Trace 120mm with a tapered steerer and 15mm axle. Sadly I can’t get one for at least a month and probably longer. Which is a bit of an issue as I have a new *ahem* project turning up this week that needs exactly that.

I could just leave it for a month unridden. This is unlikely to happen. So might bite the bullet, buy something else and either decide that’s fine or change it when the Trace’s come in.

Not really up on 29er forks. I have a set of 2012 Reba’s on my Solaris (I know I know too many bikes…) but not been that impressed. The last 150mm non tapered Revs (26) I used I didn’t like at all. Don’t have fox money 😉

Any recommendations? Or if you have a 2nd hand set of good 29er forks in that ^^^ config, I’m your man.

    Cheers.

Could you not get the X-Fusion Slants?

Slants are 26. I have those on my rocket. If you’re after a fantastic, stiff trail fork, get one! Hence wanting the trace. They do have them in non tapered versions but all the info says go for tapered.

I’ve got a set of brand new rigid forks from China you can have for £75 as a last resort?

Hmm, actually they’re QR so probably wouldn’t be any use, but if anyone reading this wants them, email me!

    Hey Alex

They gotta be 15mm or could you have 20mm

Nah could be 20mm. Hi Neil 🙂 I’;ve got Evo Wheels so switching adaptors not a prob.

Slides sorry – I’ve even got a pair so I should know better!

Slides a bit short and a bit XC but thanks!

Traces are 546mm @ 140mm and Slides 526mm @ 120mm so by the time you’ve stepped the Traces down to 120mm they should be the same a-c? Both tapered and use 15mm bolt-through but Slides have 32mm stanchions Vs Trace 34mm.

Unless they reduce the travel without reducing the a-c, which I’m not 100% on to be honest.

That could work. See if Freeborn have any of those 😉

What’s up with the Reba’s? (Not stiff enough, rubbish/poor performance?)
If poor performance, how’s about talking to a suspension specialist about upgrading/tuning them. That way you won’t end up with an extra ‘spare’ set of forks & the Reba’s can be returned to the Solaris in a better shape?
Those Trace forks look very tasty btw.

got some white brothers Loop 120 TCRs in black tapered steerer 15mm axle and magnetic platform..

Cam on an ex demo bike and was going to swap them for my 55s….,maybe….

The Reba’s were sick from birth! I just never got round to sending them back to Merlin until recently. But they are only 100mm. Trace’s look fab. That’s what’ll end up on there I think.

Steelsreel – I shall google and come back to you.

I know some can’t, but is it worth investigating to see if they could be extended to 120mm?
I’m only thinking of your pocket, as you say you can’t afford fox, but can seemingly afford to buy some forks on a temporary basis, to be replaced by other in a months time…

No chance of any Trace from Europe quicker?

    Hi
I also have some White Bros Loop which will probably be available next week.
Currently set at 140 but internally adjustable. AFAIK though altering them doesn’t change ac length
Only done 3 rides since service and new internals fitted by Ison the distributors.
Email in profile if any interest
    Cheers

I could buy some fox’s. I’m just not going too. The right thing to do is to just hang on until summer finishes and the trace’s finally arrive. I did check my Reba’s and Merlin tell me they can only go 80 to 100. X-Fusion seem to ship to Upgrade (I think) in the UK and out from there. Anyway I’ll buy from the shop that’s been really helpful, not fair to go somewhere else.

Had a look at those loops and decided not. But thanks anyway.

Fairy muff, I can go with those decisions, but also understand the frustrations of waiting 😉

    Marzocchi 44 Micro Switch 29er?

or Corsa SL Carbon for a lighter option?

I’m in the same position, waiting on Trace’s but need a fork pronto for a trip at the end of the month so considering other options at the moment. I’m in Canada by the way. Have you considered Revelations, they’ll probably end up being my back up solution unless my lbs can come up trumps and lend me a fork for my trip until the Traces appear (if they appear).

I saw these: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=94599 but seem to remember that despite the blurb they were fixed at 140mm. Anyone know?

I’m a bit suspicious now of Marz but will have a look as well.

Manitou Tower Pro’s come in 120mm tapered flavour and if you ignore most people’s misconceptions they are a superb fork for the money -the damping on them is very controllable and they are plenty stiff

Another vote for the Tower Pro’s, I was very impressed with mine.

Yep loved my tower pro’s, bear in mind you might need a different spring (they are coil+air hybrid) if you are quite um, heavy…or really light.

Sadly I just managed to bend the steerer ever so slightly on mine but then the frame did snap in two in the crash so they are clearly very strong, werent even tapered ones!

Yes, I’ve got those and they can be reduced to 120mm. You even get the spacers to do so in the pack. I’m happy with them at 120mm on my FF29, but don’t have a huge amount to compare them with.

Ta RP. Useful. Not going to go down the maintou route. Trying to rationale my fork collection!

I’ve got the Revs. They’re a bargain at that price. I doubt they’ll be as stiff as the Trace but good in every other way.

Yeah I think I’m going that way. If I still want the Trace’s I’m sure I can find another home for the Revs! Ta all for your ideas…
