@damascus. 2.6s probably DHF/DHR2s which are actully 2.49 or the bigger MM Hans Dampf combo

Newmen make a 35mm inner rim which makes up their Evolution wheels (1600g for the 30mm inner rims, so light and review well.

I’ve just built a set of wheels so I’ve been through all this.

I’m currently running schwalbe nobby nics 2.6s 29ers on stans flow mk3 and they come up as 2.52 inch wide.

Stans flow mk3 is designed for 2.3 to 2.8 and is 29. 2mm internal.  Weight: 459g (26″), 480g (27.5″), 527g (29er)

Stans flow baron is designed for 2.8 to 3.2 and 35mm internal. Weight: 26″: 532g; 27.5″: 547g; 29″: 583g

The bigger rim only weighs an extra 50g but I thought it might be too wide for a 2.6 tyre.

@ta11pau1 those Newman rims look good. Shame I didn’t see them when I built mine, I think they are cheaper than stans too!

The 35 mm inner rim width of the Evolution SL A.30 is perfect for tyres from 2.35″ up to 2.8″ and can be run at ultra-low pressures.

What confuses me is different manufacturers saying different width rims for different size tyres

Just rebuilt my hubs with Spank Oozy Trail 395+ after not liking the profile of my 29×2.6 on a 29mm internal rim. Originally fitted them with my ‘narrower’ winter tyres and the front Shorty 2.5 WT was superb on it for all of the one ride I managed before lockdowwn. I’ve now swapped it to a Vee Rubber Flow Snap 2.6 but yet to ride it. Spank rim weighed 605g on my scales.

I’d say 2.6 or even 2.3 is fine on 35mm internal.

Shorty 2.5WT on old vs new rim:
Old: Nukeproof Neutron & Shorty 2.5WT = 61.6mm
New: Spank Ooozy Trail 395+ & Shorty 2.5WT = 64.4mm
i.e. tyre sizes up 3.3mm wider (+4.6% wider)

HR2 2.3 on old vs new rim:
Old: Nukeproof Neutron & HR2 2.3 = 58.5mm
New: Spank Ooozy Trail 395+ & HR2 2.3 = 61.1mm
i.e. tyre sizes up 2.7mm wider (+4.4% wider)

Can’t find my notes on widths of the 2.6 Flow Snap on old vs new rims but it did size up fooking massive on both.

I’m running some Schwalbe 2.6s on DT Swiss 35mm inner rims at the moment, and they measure the 66mm that Schwalbe claim in the ETRTO

I also have some 2.6 DHFs and DHRs on 35mm rims, which come in smaller but work well.

35mm will allow me to go full balloon without the Schwalbes squirming while also working with the Maxxis WTs.

Having said all that, I still keep coming back to the DT Swiss EX 511, which is only 30mm wide.

I have two pairs of the Newman Evolution both with the 35mm (inner) rim dimension. One is a new set with Microspline. The original set have taken a hammering on my RipMo and apart from a few scratches are as new.

Not touched the axle or freehub bearings, spokes still tight and wheels still true. They are very light but seem to be very strong. Defo recommended.

Oh was running Maxxis 2.5 tyres, now running MM/HD 2.6.

And agreed, those Newman rims look interesting – weight a good bit less than the Spanks. Unsure what the max weight rating is on my Spanks but previous experience with other Spank rims is they were bombproof.

I’d want a 35mm rim for a 2.8 tyre, 2.5 or 2.6 on a 30 or 35mm. 2.3 up to 30mm.

Depends on the tyre though, some would be too square on a bigger rim.

They do a rim called the Sentry too now, 32mm inner width, weights slap bang in the middle of the Flow and the Baron as you’d expect… Seems to be optimised for a 2.6″ tyre.

Asym is very soft- they’re not terrible but imo they’re too heavy for their strength, I’d look elsewhere
