I've very luckily come to own a late 80's road frame and fork. The frame has a 1" headtube and the fork is threadless. I am really struggling to find a decent headset. There seems to be so little choice, and even less if you want a silver one (and it has to be silver!) The ones I can find all seem like 20 quid crappies.

Anyone know of any good ones/places to look. My Google Fu is clearly failing.

Aha, the Miche seems like a good find! Chris Bling, well not sure I can justify that. You see though, that Campy has caged ball bearings, which surely must be a piss take for £50.

There just doesn't seem to be those £40 cartridge bearing jobbies that you can find by the millions for 1 1/8th.

there's nothing inherently 'wrong' with caged bearings is there? As long as there are other seals and you do some maintenance so they don't seize and wreck the pressed in bits of the headset.

Yeah, but headset maintenance, urgh. My colossal laziness at servicing my own bikes makes me reject those options outright!

I found a Chris King 1 inch treadless headset on US eBay, worth looking over there too.

I have a very bling Cane Creek sliver headset in my old 653 racer resprayed, fitted when I changed to carbon forks. Damn hard to find unless you have a mate who runs a bike shop. It looks just right and is cartridge.

I've got a couple of Woodman Saturn headsets in 1" threadless - offer me something good as a swap 😉

Except none of those are 1" threadless Jonxmack. Ben - what kind of thing did you have in mind? I don't really have any spare parts for swaps - might I well be able to get something...

I was kidding - they used to be £60 I think, so call it £30 inc. postage.

I have a Cane creek S2 on my road bike in the 1 inch flavour and works perfectly only downside is its not very blingy.
Not seen many silver ones about either.

I bought a reasonable cartridge bearing Ritchey one recently for about a tenner on either Wiggle or CRC....think it was an end of line thing though.

Got a token one and it kept coming loose gradually until the needle bearings would pop out of the cage and make it impossible to steer. So bought one of those SC1's for a fiver and been ok since. Would like to find a 1" stem in a sensible length though. Using a normal stem with a shim and I don't like it.

Lots of not very silver options, they're much rarer. I've plumped for the Miche one, I got to the "oh what the hell" point. Why has silver gone so far out of favour?
