Warning - coffee knobber content. Stop reading now if this offends your Nescafé sensibilities. And maybe also if you are an arachnophobe.
I was just absent mindedly going through my morning espresso ritual. I ground a single dose of beans, tipped the grounds out of the catch cup and into the portafilter. I then started to rake them with a needle distribution tool.
Something was not quite right 🤔
The top of the ground coffee was moving without me touching it. Sort of rippling and undulating. I stopped raking and just stared, it was weird AF. I genuinely thought I was hallucinating and was about to sit down to clear my addled brain when....
There was a mini eruption and "something" leapt straight up into the air from below the surface of the coffee, scattering grounds everywhere. I let out a very high pitched girly yelp ☺️
Once I realised a caffeinated and pissed off alien zombie monster wasn't about to eat my face, I saw this fella scurrying away. Until he stopped long enough for me to take a pic and presumably think wtf just happened? Unfortunately he seems to have lost a leg during this adventure, which I may have consumed as I didn't want to waste the coffee.
He must have found his way into the catch cup and been unable to crawl back up the smooth sides. Note to self. Check it. Every. Single. Time.
I quite like spiders and never kill them, but this little ****er very nearly did for me by cardiac arrest!

If he'd been a couple of seconds slower with his Houdini act, he'd have been tamped, covered with a puck screen and been "extracted" by 94 degree C water at 9 bar pressure. I'd have consumed a whole lot more of him and been none the wiser!

Coffee with notes of spider - can't imagine that selling well in costa
If you were using the beans that are crapped out by an ocelot (or whatever), a bit of boiled spider may have added just the right note. I'm sure James Hoffman did a video about it.

He did. "Kopi Luwak". Avoid like the plague because once it became trendy, locals trapped the civet cats and kept them in tiny cages and forced them to eat (often substandard) coffee beans. Apparently even if you can source certified cruelty free stuff, it ain't all that. It's a pass from me.
I then started to rake them with a needle distribution tool.
Brilliant, and lets be honest, everyone should have yearns for an needle distribution tool to complete their tool chest.
Would an old spoke work?
👍 😉 🙃
Would an old spoke work?
Probably! The best DIY version is acupuncture needles (cheap on Amazon) stuck in a champagne cork.
Glad you have managed to get that out on the web...
What about an old woke spork.
Well done OP, made me laugh 👍
What about an old woke spork.
Works OK, but refuses to rake unless the coffee is sustainable and fair trade.
Reminds me of the Scottish butcher who sold woad pork.....

Bit of added protein, probably improved the flavour too 😉
Just glad I don’t do fancy coffee, and I only use teabags for tea. 🥴
I do have spiders around the house, the ones in the kitchen are mostly around the window, handy for catching the flies that come in when the window’s open. Very efficient they are, too.

Maybe it could be the very thing for the Halloween season

Linky no worky, but there's a whole series of those. Some bloke fed various drugs to spiders and then photographed the resultant webs.
