I took it that the donkey had left it quite a while before reporting it, and then couldn't remember the exact date, hence the 'sometime between February and April' suggestion ?

is there any evidence that the horse and donkey would have been distressed and/or felt dirty? could he argue in court that they seemed to enjoy it?

The police found him out because he was also arrested for shagging a pig a few days earlier. Apparently the pig squealed on him!
