Just auction licences to wealthy hunters for the right to hunt them. They're basically just oversized hamsters, anyway.

The hippos wouldn't be the worry. Wading around the columbian jungle to do it? FARC that.

And we think we have problems with Grey Squirrels!

Can't we get 'hunters' from the USA to head south and shoot them before posting about it on social media? Would save them a trip to Africa. Seems like there is a business opportunity.

Anyone here ever eaten Hippo? Tried most things but not that yet.
Something that size and shape should not taste like chicken.
It may get to star in the next remake of The Equaliser though.

It’s getting it onto a kebab shop skewer that’s the tricky bit

I doubt they'll find a vet willing to take that on. Most of them have taken the Hippo-nutsack Oath.

The scientists need to make their minds up

Pablo Escobar's 'cocaine hippos' show how invasive species can restore a lost world

“The feral hippos in South America are similar in diet and body size to extinct giant llamas, while a bizarre type of extinct mammal – a notoungulata – shares with hippos large size and semiaquatic habitats,” explained study co-author John Rowan, Darwin fellow in organismic and evolutionary biology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

Or

Pablo Escobar's hippos must be culled to halt biodiversity disaster – scientists

Hippos imported illegally into Colombia for Pablo Escobar’s private zoo have gone feral in the lush tropical countryside and must be culled before their invasive presence starts to wipe out indigenous flora and fauna, scientists have warned.

As my old nature conservation boss would say, It's all just gardening anyway!
He was a geologist though so normal time frames did not compute 🤣

A wolf in sheep's clothing is the hippo.

They look all chubby and cute with their comedy ears and smiling eyes.

But within seconds they can transform from a snoozy, semi-submerged fat island to a roaring blubberous* freight train armed with teeth that would clip off your arm like secateurs would a rose stem.

*possibly made that up

Scary buggers - you don't want to bump into one at night as they are grazing the lawns of the lodge you are staying at in Kenya. Believe me!

But such procedures are far from simple - or cheap - and Carlos Valderrama has experience of this. In 2009, he performed a castration of a male "cocaine hippo" as part of an experiment to study options to control the growing population.

Good to see he's found a fulfilling post-football career, rather than becoming a TV pundit.

And he has a ready-made bush to hide in when things turn nasty...

Love how they’re called cocaine hippos. Makes them sound like a more dangerous and unpredictable subspecies of hippo. Wild eyed and twitching. Roaming the Colombian jungles desperately looking for a fix. Don’t try and separate Mr Potamus from his pipe!

A hippo can swim much faster than a human. They can also run much faster than a human.
.
If you want to beat one in a triathlon you had better be pretty handy on a bike!
