The vast majority of words are obscure. I think about 50% of the running words in the average text are composed of the 100 most frequent words. The 5,000th most frequent word occurs very infrequently but people who read a lot generally know more than 20,000 word families (so more than 100,000 different word forms). If you pick a random listing from a full-sized dictionary, it's probably going to be an obscure word.

Well sure, but Wordle uses a reduced dictionary, doesn’t it? I'm surprised this is in it.
Why? It’s something you can buy in a shop.

I would’ve thought it is quite an obscure word, especially if you are American. The Wordle word list is quite limited after all. Also, personally I would never use the term without the word ‘tie’ after it. On its own it is just the name of a town/racecourse.
