trying to attempt this myself and was hoping it would be as simple as putting the light on the wall, and connecting the other end red to red and black to black to a nearby internal light, sort of like a spur. so when the internal light is on, so's the external. thats the plan anyway.
on opening up the internal light fitting, and expecting it to be obvious, i find something a little more complicated. ive taken pics but im hoping i can describe it well enough before i start uploading stuff.
the junction box has a terminal block inside with 'flex' terminals on each end (i understand that, its for the actual lamp cable) and then lots of connections in the middle. theres 2 cables coming in (im guessing thats in and out of a loop) and the reds, blacks and earth all go to their respective sections.
is it as simple as bringing my external cable through and connecting red and black to any red and black connection thats already there?
i ask, as i thought id copy the identical house next door, but, when i opened that up its nothing like. his external wire comes in and goes to a junction box inside the door. but, then it gets complicated (for me anyway). he has 2 wires leaving the junction box. red/black/earth, and a single red.
the single red joins the external red, and black to black, but.....the red and earth of the red/black/earth cable just go to nothing.
hopefully my description has been adequate, but i fear it maybe hasnt 😀
do i need to upload pics, or can this be sorted with a simple "just join your red and black to any existing red and black and youll be reet" 🙂
(comments of "youre clueless, get a sparky" shall be ignored) 😀
thanks a lot
You seem clueless and shall be ignored. 😀
you know this already of course, so I don't know why I'm even writing it, but while you're doing this, you've popped the appropriate RCD in your CU haven't you?

erm, no.
in short you'll need to identify which is switched live and hang the external light from that red.
as a serious question, have you actually looked up any online tutorials or bought a decent DIY book that covers this kind of thing?
email me pics (email in my profile) and I'll advise.
Rich.

havent got as far as touching the innards yet, but yes, once i start connecting things, ill knock it off at CU.
no, havent looked at a DIY book yet, as i was expecting to see an obvious connection, rather than something more complicated.
rwamartin, ill mail you as soon as ive stuck my pics onto the laptop.
thanks
