We will be in touch
Wife, 6 year old and me are hoping to get away for some winter sun this year to cheer us up after a challenging year. Looking for warm places, not cold. Happy to stay in hotel or an apartment or whatever and self-cater or inclusive doesn't really matter.
Any recommendations on guaranteed sun/warm non-chavtastic places to head for?
And where's the best place to get a good deal on something like that? Someone at work mentioned Lastminute.com, but haven't tried it.
non-chavtastic
That may be the stumbling block.
[s]Turkey
Tenerife
Lanzarote[/s]
Fuertaventura - the German bit
Mexico (can you have American chavs?)
Caribbean?
i was going to suggest Gran Canaria or Tenerife as you could get some biking in, but then i saw the non-chavtastic bit....
how about Finale Ligure?
just how chavtastic are Gran Canaria/Tenerife/Lanzarote? if there's biking to be had i'm sure the sun and heat can ease the pain.
What's your budget?
To avoid chavs, my top tips are Morocco, The Maldives, Southern Tunisia, Mauritius and the smaller Caribbean islands.
Not all Tenerife is chavvy, likewise Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura. I was last in Fuertventura during October and didn't see any chavs, lots of English bars and Sunday roast restaurants, but a few minutes drive will put you in traditional villages well away from the crowds.
Morocco is probably not a great place to go right now. Some of the travel agencies are advising people to avoid it for a while in case of possible political upheavals. I don´t know how reliable that is but maybe worth checking out.
Tenerife would be fine, just don´t stay in a tourist area. There are plenty of getaway apartments and out of the way hotels out there. From what I hear the biking is well worth it too. If you like, I can ask some of the guys on the spanish mtb forums about where to stay to avoid chavs etc.
sunnrider, yes please. nicely.
We've stayed up in the mountains in Tenerife a couple of times, nothing like staying on the coast.
We've always found places through ownersdirect and sorted our own flghts
Conil village, Costa del la Luz, SW Spain.
Not a chav or chip bar in sight; Mainly Spanish and lots of surfers, windsufers, MTBers, Roadies etc. The beach in Conil is 14km long, backed by farmland.
Local riding is rolling hills and good XC. I guide down there some times and its great laid back seaside riding.
Cadiz is nearby and a great city with loads of history.
The old man has got a place in a development just outside Playa Blanca in Lanzarote, we've never found it 'chavtastic' - there are other tourists there obviously and there are a couple of British bars but these are easily avoided and there are plenty of nice restaraunts. We've found it great weather wise and had extremely laod back holidays there. There's biking to be had as well, search the forum for info on MTB Lanzarote. If you're interested I could send more info...
costa calma, southern fuerteventura. mainly german resort with lots of riding straight out of the hotels. awesome white sandy beaches, zoo up the road for the little one, excellent surfing on the west coast which is a 10 minute drive across the island. look at around £400 per week.per head AI in a 4star hotel, nipper should be fair bit less.
I take offence to Tenerife being called Chav-tastic. It all depends on where you decide to stay. OK, you can go stay with the party crowd at vomit central near Veronicas in Playa de Las Americas, or with a little research you can stay somewhere pretty classy and upmarket, or somewhere more relaxed and rural.
There's more to Tenerife than a 2.50€ full english with a free pint!
Oh, and yes you can go biking 😀
I got one quick reply for Tenerife aswell. They recommended Hotel Nivaria http://www.hotelnivaria.com. Probably get a few more tomorrow.
Its always easy to avoid idiot tourists, basically they´re lazy and won´t go too far from their base.
I was in Ibiza last year and we didn´t see a single pavement pizza or full english. Nice place to ride too.
we're trying cape verde this winter. couple of hours south of canaries i think. looks lovely.
Gambia is only 5hr from Gatwick, will be lovely & lush there now the humid wet season has passed. Gambia experience / Thomas Cook do some good deals. Not the bargain it was though.
