The question is - do they talk to you when they're not wound up?

Why because she wants to listen to it in the garden.

I have a small wind up Roberts radio that is a cracking little radio, it used to be really good as a wind up radio but with all these things after a period of not recharging by winding it the internal battery seems to have suffered. It still takes normal AA batteries in the back and runs for weeks on 2 AA batteries. If I needed one again for gardening/camping etc I would go for solar powered or just batteries.

Sounds like the one we have and it is excellent. I occasionally use the wind up option but it lasts for ages on rechargeable batteries and the sound quality and reception are better than any of our other fm / am radios.
