Why does WMP show 2 of almost every tune I have in its library, the hard drive folder certainly doesn't have duplicate versions of each tune.

When I delete the first one of the two, if set to delete off hard drive too, the tune on the hard drive goes. Same settings, delete tune 2 (duplicate) and the hard drive version in the folder stays intact.

Is there nay way of getting WMP to show one song or is there a replacement that works.

BTW, its a new hard drive, populated with only music and photos. fresh installation of the operating system too.

I just deleted all the duplicate tunes only to find its put them all back again!

Does the duplicate actually play? Did you move your music files onto the new HDD from another location? If the answers are NO and YES respectively, I suggest that WMP library is still hanging onto the reference to the old location (which does not play cos the files aren't there) and has re-imported your music from the new location. I managed to do similar with iTunes some years ago and spent a long time deleting the duplicates.

As for how you stop it constantly re-importing, I really don't know sorry. As a matter of interest see if it does the same with iTunes.

Use itunes for music, VLC for films and tv. Problem solved.

If you go into the WMP menu and click "Organise...Manage Libraries...Music", what is listed?

Normally, when that happens to me, it's because the hard drive was plugged in once and synced as drive 'f', then by some random wire-swapping, has plugged in and synced again as drive 'some other letter'.

Or it could be because WMP is utterly rubbish. I've never managed to get my version to act sensibly. Have you considered another piece of software as an alternative?

Sussed it folks thanks, on the external drive that had all the music on before I copied it to the new hard drive, it had a file in there with almost a duplicate of the music folder I copied over. Hence the additional 4000 songs unknowingly put onto the new drive.

Obviously WMP isn't as stupid as me! I can only think it was a drag and drop mistake from the old PC as it was in a folder.
