This year seems to be the best year in a long time for winberries, where I normally ride is teeming with them (Long Mynd). The only thing equally tasty to a mid-ride wild snack is a blackberry, imo. Although they are much more time consuming to pick.

Has anyone else been enjoying them?

Ah! Blaeberries.

Yup nibbled a few the other week when I was out with the dog. Not as nice as Raspberries, Cherries or strawberries but easier to find.

Get out.

Good ones are like Vimto in a bubble, best served on a fresh pancake outdoors on an open fire...

Winberries? Are you thinking about winnets and dangeleberries? If so, plenty.

I call them bilberries too. (Grew up on the Lancashire/Yorkshire border)

Interesting that many people think blueberries and bilberries are the same thing. Blueberries are kind of green in the middle if you split them whereas bilberries are purple all the way through.

The Cleggnuts will be out soon, if the squirrels don't get them!

picked 5kg this year - took one hour using the thingamagig ^^^ & three hours sifting afterwards - still well worth it.

enoungh to make 25 jars of jam - heaven.

In my continuous search for the best piucking spot - I think I found it.

@matt,

2.25 lb billberries
rind & juice of one lemon
1 bottle of certo

method: billberries, sugar & lemon rind & juice in a jam pan
heat gently till sugar dissolved
add a flake of butter
bring to full rolling boil & boil for 3 minutes

remove from heat
add certo
test if set - might need a bit more boiling

slap in jars

enjoy

I could give you the recipe for bilberry slump too - my total favourite

The neighbours to one side of me have a jungle garden full of blackberry bushes been raiding it the past week, nearly got a full container in the freezer already.

I reckon there's about another 2-3 weeks harvesting left.

Ah, Winberries. Food of the gods. We used to pick loads at a secret location on the Sugar Loaf. My grans' Winberry tart was honestly the most delicious thing I have ever eaten in my life. Found a vast number of them recently high in the Alps while out there riding. Had a very rapid feast while waiting for the group to clear some nasty switchbacks 🙂
