I've seen you can get 5G SIMs with massive data allowances, miles more than you'd get on an equivalently-priced 4G plan. I'm guessing I know the answer already, but what's stopping me signing up for a 5G plan and sticking the SIM in my 4G device?

Nothing. 5G sim simply means it will give you access to the 5g network. If you are in a 4g only area or the device can only manage 4g and below it'll just happily use what it can.

Yes, especially if you’ve had your vaccine.

Surely if you've had your vaccine you don't even need SIM card or phone in a 5G area? I though the microchip 'they' inject means you can access the internet/call people telepathically? (Unless you block the signal with with a tinfoil hat, obvs)

On a serious note. As mentioned above, it's like having a 3G only phone and putting a 4G SIM card in it. You'll just not be able to access the 4G bandwidths but everything else will work (or that's what I assume).
I'm not convinced of the need for 5G on mobile phones, however, once 5G is a viable replacement (in terms of cost/bandwidths) to fast fibre BB it could be a game changer.

Ooh, really? MrsIHN should get the vaccine a bit earlier than me, so that could solve our rural broadband problems (assuming the vaccine will also pick up 4G). Once I've had it too, we're laughing.

Isn't a SIM card just a SIM card?
The device it goes in has to have the tech built in to operate on 3G, 4G or 5G.

That is the whole point of it, to remove the need for cabling to the building. Don't understand why people think they need it on a phone though...

It depends on the device, if the device itself supports 5G then it should work fine.

True - should have said that. The '5G sim' is in reality just a bog standard sim card that is linked to an account that has access to the 5G network.

IF 5G comes to me here it'll be a game changer. Currently get out household internet from a 4g router (with a '5g' sim in it) and get circa 30mbps. Currently I'm being asked to apply for a grant with fellow neighbours and to chip in to get better broadband - currently about 3mbps. Not holding my breath - we only got 4g here 12 months ago, and before that it was 2g on a good day so 5g might be some way off. Roll out seems the wrong way around - should have gone to rural areas first and then to cities where there is already good broadband.

Conspiracy theorists, you just need to make sure the 5G antenna comes out of your hoop and not your ears.

You have obviously been reading internet nonsense. The microchips let Them track you. It doesn't not let you contact Them. If it did, everyone would know who They are, which would defeat the whole plan.

Streaming music, videos and games just like what people use other devices for.

@convert we have just tried that option on our estate open reach want £250k to do the area of about 600 properties so 800 each for fttp I would have been ok with cost but all 600 had to sign up for it and form a legal entity so no chance getting 12down .4 up can take 30 mins to upload a simple word doc for WFH
I wouldn’t hold your breath on open reach

Hiya,

As an Ex SIM designer and author of some of the standards, err nothing stopping you from doing this. Technically little difference between 4G SIM and 5G SIM there are new features added all the time but the Authentication onto the network is exactly the same, Milenage 😉

Not just that - it also comes with a free U2 album.

Works just fine, I'm doing exactly that now with my new contract SIM in my iPhone X. I'll use the 5G when I eventually need a new phone, hopefully it'll be more widespread by then.

No way - like ET it (not you) needs to phone home so they know all your bad thoughts. It all goes via Facebook and then who knows where (a pizza joint down some stairs)??. Or sommat like that.

Jeez, is that even a job? I mean it can't take much designing, look at it:
