what the hell is going on.
Only on STW does the thing start whizzing away like a madman.
I'm not very good (read $h1t) with computers.
can somebody tell me what the hell is going on.
it does it if I log on via both AOL and internet explorer.
help please

Probably all the flash ads on STW as they are quite CPU intensive, which will generate more heat and then your fans kick in.
Or your computers about to explode.

Yep, all the whizzy flash ads around the forum mean more work for your computer. The noise you hear are your fans coming on to keep your laptop cool while it is doing this work.
Perfectly normal.
