Seems an awesome way to monitor stuff
Not so sure about posting my own entries
Anyone else use it? Tips?
Be interesting?
It is an amazing way to stick your head into the stream of conciseness that is the internet. A fun game is to watch a controversial TV program and search around for a hashtag that matches. There is a lot that goes on there.
@JasonWD
Yup..
I'm on it..

that's like a retweet 😉
I'm on it, can't be bothered to inform the world of what I had for breakfast though, so just use it to stalk famous(ish) people from the comfort of my own toilet.
I'm on the '****ter' as I once heard someone call it!?
Mainly use it to monitor 'design' related things. Things related to my MA in Design, Sustainable Futures.
If I [rarely] have something interesting to say that relates to that i'll 'tweet'
@imjustinfloyd - that's me.
My tip would be focus. Focus on a single area of interest (in general) helps you keep the signal/noise ratio good.
I started just listening, ended up talking back, have made some good friends and been to some amazing places, all cos of stuff started on twitter.
I like your pic, is that you in the white t-shirt? 😉
Don't follow people you don't like, and if you do don't DM them if you don't like what they say!
I use it. Mainly for keeping up with what's going on and partly for putting up photos / blogs etc. I like it because I get all the news far quicker than via the websites and you get a general feel for what's happening biking wise. I only use it for biking so only follow biking people.
Top tips? Interact. It's easier to interact with people than facebook etc. Like all the people who helped me last night when I spilled red wine on my rug. Being interesting isn't important I don't think.
I think I'm doug_basquemtb or doug_basquemtb.com
I'm on twitter, but only because a work colleague thought it would be funny to set up an account in my name and post random messages like: "going for a coffee enema this evening" etc.
He even nicked a pic from my facebook page to use.
Got him back though, but 'forgetting my password' and intercepting the reminder e-mail on his computer while he was away from his desk.
Can't remember the username or password now, so am a bit stuck.
we do it just to stalk Doug in the Basque.
No other reason.
*stalks*
I've just this week signed up to Twitter. Its mainly to promote a blog I've started working on which in turn is to promote a series of bike rides I want to do for charity next year. Got to get a justgiving page sorted out next. Its a bit of a rabit hole once you start down the path of sticking stuff on the net.
All I've managed to do is post a lot of badly written crap at the moment but its a start.
TBC but I'm stalking you back. Does that create some kind of stalking feedback loop?
Me. stilltortoise. No idea why I signed up really. I do post on it (and those posts automatically appear on my blog), although nothing that most people would give two hoots about reading.
I do find it good for keeping up to date with the World Cup downhill though, and most of who/what I follow is biking related
on it but dont use it. I dont understand how it works to be honest 🙁
Doug - i will check the help section and get back to you.
There is a real danger we are now breaking the web, after my dally with HTML this afternoon on our news page it wouldn't suprise me if the google police are on the way.
Just has someone sign up to follow me (which doesn't happen often). Which one of you lot is Alexander? 🙂
That's moi. Follow a few STWers although I don't post that much.
I'm on, @SteveCold.
I find it quite interesting to read new and the like when it happens...and to post about what I had for breakfast!
I dont understand how it works to be honest
You use text messages on your phone? It's like that.
Sending messages to @someone will send to them but is publicly readable. You can send private 'direct messages' with D someone instead. Otherwise, messages just go out there where anyone following you will see them, or anyone looking at your Twitter page.
If you like what someone writes, follow them. If you don't, don't.
When you get to following a few (and you'll be surprised how quickly you go from "how do I find people to follow?" to "jesus christ, how do I keep up with all this?"), consider using a dedicated Twitter client such as Tweetdeck. Tweetdeck lets you list your followees in columns, so you can put (for example) STW people together. Personally I just have two inaccurately named columns, "friends" for people I actually know and "celebs" for everyone else.
I'm @UKCougar, should anyone want to read my drivel.
I use it, follow a fair few people and have it linked to my facebook so use that as the main status updater thingemybob - @welshside
Couger... what does the # mean then ?
I'm loweydotcom btw.
# is for topics i.e. #clarkson you can click on a # comment and see all the post made with that tag and you can follow # you select to follow.
@ffflow
cougar hasn't been that interesting today....
Seems an awesome way to monitor stuff
yep it is, I use it to follow motorbiking by following MCN. It's great when you out and about then get a tweet telling you who just got pole in british superbikes etc....
Currently only following three tweeters at the moment. Don't follow justin beiber, my daughter does and she must get some 300 messages a day it seems 😯
i use it for work related stuff mainly - keep up to date with whats happening in adventure travel/adventure sports etc. its good for keeping in touch/making connections with people.
@muchbettertom and @muchbetteradven
@Missus_Toast
Mostly features me whinging and talking about nerdy stuff.
Yeah. #Hashtags are like tags on mp3s or photos. You can search on them 'live' like you can a user, and give them their own column on Twitter. Some are 'official' hashtags and some are just made up.
So, say you were watching a TV show and they gave their official hashtag as #someTVshow , you could search on #someTVshow and Tweetdeck would collate all the tweets with that tag, constantly updating.
People also tag randomly, #mondaysarecrap #whatthehellamidoinghere etc. TBH though, I wouldn't worry about hashtags too much, they don't do anything 'special' within Twitter itself. When you need to use them, you'll know.
cougar hasn't been that interesting today....
Oh I'm sorry, I have a cold.
@Citizenfishy I use my twitter account to spread the middle aged angst, consequently only my Mum follows me
@garylake – I flit between Bikes, Graphic Design and Tech. Also plugging my charity attempt at the non-stop, offroad Wales Coast 2 Coast ride next year: http://wc2c.cyclistno1.co.uk
I'm on twitter - twitter name is the same as my 'real' name from email address in my profile.
like most people general guff about life and the occasional bike related stuff.
I joined this morning, I have one follower who appears to be a hot chick offering free porn. Hmmmm....
@n00bzill4
Oh I'm sorry, I have a cold.
It's OK, I've not been online much.
I am - @miketually. I post things like:
I follow Mike just so I can gloat when he fails to make the 24 tunnocks last all the way to Christmas Eve...
I'm on - @bmwchaz I follow Cycling stuff don't post much but I am followed by a Fish & Chip Shop in Basingstoke!
@blackhound59 - Do a bit of sleb stalking (Dara O'Brian, Caitlin Moran, Jane Garvey, Rio Ferdinand I think) and the rest are mostly bike related.
Post random, boring, stuff but it keeps me amused.
Nobody really famous follows me, Jill Homer, Kent Peterson and Orena45 being the most famous. But MrsB is followed by Michael D. Higgins! (President of Ireland for those not follwoing recent international news)
Be warned I upset a lot of people in twitter if I don't think they are coming up to scratch, need to cull soon too
I think I'm going to follow @_rOcKeTdOg_ just so as I can delete him. (-:
Just realised I'vestarted following a whole load of you, as if I didn't get enough of you on here! @mogrim, comes with free Spanish classes too 🙂
I am signed up, but the profoundness of my musings can't possibly fit into 140 characters so I stick to my blog and just use it to get updates from a few people really.
Olé, olé y olé.
I think I'm going to follow @_rOcKeTdOg_ just so as I can 🙁 .delete him
Better stop following my flickr account too
When that tune is sung, is there an "y" in there then, between the last two "olés"?
I'm on there. Signed up ages ago but couldn't think what to do with it. Started going on there again after the Japan tsunami, and boingboing.net had a feature about a journalist from the NYT in Japan who was Tweeting about it.
Then started picking up on others Tweeting about the Arab Spring thing.
William Gibson, (@greatdismal), Duncan Jones, (@manmademoon), are a couple of people I follow, along with
Cerys Matthews and Lauren Laverne, but, to be honest, I can go a week or more between visits, and very rarely
post anything, and even then it's usually just a reply to another post.
My Twitter name reflects my online presence perfectly: @phasmainmachina
And if anyone imagines that following me might result in me posting anything insightful, well Satan will
host the Winter Olympics before that ever happens. 😛
I love twitter. Last night I learned that if you live in one of the rather pleasant parts of northern Spain, you shouldn't spill red wine on your carpet, as you won't have the right ingredients to sort it out! 😆
Better stop following my flickr account too
Why else do you think I started following it?
(Ok, it was Bourbonhenge)
I treat it like a quick dip into a trashy magazine or newspaper combined with some gossip/chat with friends. Some news, some funny stuff and some proper communication. Good for whiling away the times when you would flick through the aforesaid magazines/newspapers.
I'm, surprisingly, 'orena45' on Twunter.
You're way more famous than me Kev (@blackhound), you've done proper bike rides and starred in podcasts as a result and that 🙂
Anyway, my claim to fame is that Twitter legend, Mr Stephen Fry follows me (ok, and 10,000 odd others...but he still follows me)!
me
@harrythespider
@traditionalsurf
Why else do you think I started following it?(Ok, it was Bourbonhenge)
you can't beat a biscuit (prefer Custard Creams tho)
@locotuning, quite dull though unless I'm really cross 😉
Edit: rocketdogs blocked me, was I something I said 😥
Just opened my account - ArchComplainer
Loving your profile pic!
@dialledbikes
pretty slack at tweeting though (mainly cos I have nowt interesting to tweet)
I've been on there for a little while, @trustyrusty10
Interesting way of keeping up with things i find, although i dont lead an interesting enough life to tweet much myself.
Just started following a few of you, you'd better be more interesting than me.
I've just followed a few of you lot 😛
I'm @becky_kirk43
I expect there's an occasional "good" tweet amongst the many dull, grumpy or mundane ones! 😛
I don't think I really get twitter. I've had an account for years but never yet seen anything remotely interesting on it other than stuff posted by brian cox, and even then it's sometimes a bit dull. I tried searching for stuff but rarely get anything that relates to what I want to see and often contains a bunch of inaccurate, stupid comments about unrelated nonsense. I feel like I SHOULD like it and it should be a useful resource but I can't help but feel it's about free commercial entity publishing and teenagers waffling ~140 character insults.
i have an account but just doesn't really interest me any more, find G+ seems to offer a bit more interactivity and better linking through to other resources.
I'm on it but have nothing interesting to post...mainly due to me having no life for last 6 months...I used to post a daily post of colour of underwear (and not post anything else) - did that for a fortnight and ended up with about 80 followers - weirdos!
I then did an 'experiment' with some of that shiney hair shampoo - washed one arm in that and the other in soap to see if it made a difference...and I tweeted about that...
Twitter is effectively me talking to my conscience...it doesn't interact when I talk direct to it as I'm THAT boring.
@dick_barton - but seriously, it isn't for the sane, suicidal or intelligent!
@AidanHarding It's interesting when I'm doing something interesting like organising SSUK or racing the Divide. A bit boring when I'm drowning in work (and currently snot, too).
For people to follow @MTFU_Training is funny.
@Jonny_Kato
although it just makes me realise how mundane my life is!
Blimey, becky_kirk43 is tweeting machine!
For people to follow @MTFU_Training is funny.
They're very good. @MarkCavendish is worth following as well, even if you're not into road cycling, he tweets some funny stuff.
I only got into it recently when I got a smartphone and only really follow some MTBing mates and some cycling journalists, it's useful for arranging rides and just seeing what's going on in the world of cycling.
If anyone is desperately bored though I went for the highly original name/year of birth: @jameslyon77
The STW business plan is on Twitter today @singletrackmark
Yup, I'm @2wheels1guy
I mainly stalk bike industry stuff & comedians.
Recommend @ThePoke @Slashleen @ShitMyDadSays & @TFLN for a giggle.
Right, I'm following all of you now I think.
#waitsforsomethinginterestingtohappen
I ****. I'm not very good though.
Ha ha ha, I can't believe STW censored me!!
I use ****ter, I'm still not very good though.
