I was going to say compressed air too but the fact that some of them have lagged pipes means they may have been designed to run on steam from an external boiler.

Yes remember uncle saying the can run on air or steam as comes with long clear hose and conecter..

A beam engine, used for pumping large volumes of liquid, in particular raising water from a river up to a canal running higher up the side of a valley. Here's a pic of part of the Crofton Beam Engine that pumps water up to the Kennet and Avon Canal at Great Bedwin, near Marlborough:

If you're anywhere near west London the [url= http://www.kbsm.org/ ]Kew Bridge Steam Museum[/url] has working examples. The Science Museum's got one, too.

Originally these was scaled down working Pump machines
before they made the real thing, incase it did not work.

Eventually through the years become working toys.
Just have to check what it actually is.

But keep it nice conversation point.
