Was reading an old Singletrack mag this morning (like issue 76) where chipps recommends an Aeropress Aerobi coffee maker.

I really like the idea of this, though not to take on bike packing expeditions, just for solo home use.

Any users who can recommend one model over another?

The original is quite big to store.

I’ve got my eye on a “Go” which works the same but seems to fold up quite small and do the same job.

I got a Go for my birthday. Packs into itself and makes excellent coffee.

I’ve got the original one, had it for 10+ years. Works well and makes a decent coffee when using decent beans.

Just don’t let your wife, if she’s anything like mine, pack it when you go on holiday though. Or at least make sure you have all of the parts. Nothing worse than having some nice beans that you ground especially and 90% of an Aeropress, with nothing else to make coffee in. 🙄

I'd get the full size one not the Go TBH. The full size one doesn't make that much coffee and the Go isn't that much smaller to pack.

I have an original one in one office and a Delter press in another office. Delter makes far nicer coffee.

Thanks very much people.

Don't need to factor in the portable features so original it is.

Cheers.

Had the original for about 7 years and use it every day. It makes great coffee.

Well, the Go won't accommodate your Knock Aergrind, so what use is that?

You DO have an Aergrind, I assume?

I have an aeropress in the house, used a few times a day, and a go in the van.

Can't see the point in the go for the house, its lower capacity and has an included cup, both of which are less useful in a kitchen

I have an Aeropress and a Nanopresso. Aeropresso is messy and coffee is meh, Nanopresso makes lovely espresso.
Sorry classic STW recommend what you have!

That review of the Delter Press doesn't match my experience at all.

He seems quite biased and really has exaggerated the negative attributes. I've been using one for about a year and the things he's claiming just don't happen. The 'lid' doesn't fall out, the seal doesn't pinch. It is slightly more time-consuming to clean.
And i've had way more hassle with an aeropress due to the fact it's not transparent so it's harder to measure the water.

Ultimately, the coffee (the exact same coffee) tastes noticeably nicer to me than the aeropress.

I just about spat my (aeropressed) coffee out!

I mean, good god man, is there any other way?

Ok, there is the Feld I guess. But you know what I mean.

Cool. You know that doesn’t invalidate someone else’s experience? He’s telling you his from an aeropress users viewpoint. It seemed informative to me and it was more of ‘I don’t see any real benefit to change’. If anything it was changing you’ll **** it up until you get used to doing it differently. He positively invites delter users to comment about their experience.

And i’ve had way more hassle with an aeropress due to the fact it’s not transparent so it’s harder to measure the water.

Ah, take it you’re doing it the ‘instructions’ way. That’s your problem. Invert it and you are pouring in the top and there’s a bunch of coffee coming up to the top. It’s impossible to not see (but also possible to overfill if you are going for the maximum volume).

Ive had my aeropress for >5 years, worn out 2 of the rubber plunger things. I like it’s coffee, I like it’s functionality. I like how easy it is to clean. I have had only one disaster, left it too long before putting on the lid and the heat meant I didn’t close it properly.... looked like I’d sharted the kitchen!

Never taken it bivvying as:
a) I grind fresh each time
b) the Go would have that exact response! Sub optimal in the middle of the Cairngorms, etc. 🤪

I have 2 of the original aeropress, which I have used for years and make, in my opinion, the best coffee ever.
I recently bought the little one for the camper van and used it in anger on a recent trip. It works equally well as the original, takes up much less space and you don't need a separate cup.

I fill to the top.

Funnily enough I just busted open my Aeropress this morning as my bean to cup machine needs some attention. Always used it more as a portable coffee maker per, and after my first coffee with it I thought why the hell you'd use an Aeropress at home over a normal Caffetierre or even a filter paper option? Struggling to see what its bringing to the party. The coffee was OK, but I've had nicer filter coffee. Not sure what the aeropress is doing over and above other methods. If you want an espresso then nothing short of a proper espresso will do. But if you want filter coffee, which is basically all an Aeropress is, then why use an Aeropress over normal filter coffee options? Its great for portability but thats it. The volume of coffee it makes is very limited, its more of a faff and more of a clean up afterwards..unless I'm doing it wrong of course.

I have tiny kitchen so proper filter machine would be in the way.
Had a couple of counter top bean to cup machines in the past
I have broken too many caffetierres, at home and camping.
I just rinse the Aeropress foot under the tap which is clean enough for me.

Horses for courses innit. I have a mate who only drinks Espresso out of a £600+ machine that takes up half his kitchen, a separate machine to grind the beans and only gets a thimble full of, in all honesty, pretty average, if not overly bitter shot of coffee that makes me wince. But he loves the ceremony.

I like the fact that it can make anything from a Moka-pot style strong coffee to a longer filter coffee. What's more, it's easy to get a nice, balanced extraction with an aeropress than with other techniques.

That's not to say aeropress makes 'nicer' coffee than anything else but that it's likely to be able to make coffee that you like if you find the right recipe for you.

He's obviously got no idea what he's doing then. It was a complete revelation to me that you can have very nice tasting Espresso. It is still somewhat of a faff though

Aeropress makes different tasting coffee to filter coffee.

Perhaps. Out of filter, cafetiere and Aeropress, I'd say Aeropress is the least messy. A nice squashed puck of coffee to pop straight into the bin/food waste. Filter is a close second but can drip everywhere

Slight tangent, but I wonder how people are making their aeropresses last years?

I have been through two, usually making 2 or 3 coffees a day. When I say "been through" I don't mean the bung has worn, I mean the cylinder has: both times I have worn out two or three bungs until the cylinder no longer seals with a new bung.

At this point I've given up, which is a shame as I liked the aeropress coffee.

I must be (have been!) doing something wrong. Possibly too much force when depressing the plunger, or using too fine a grind 😐

Currently I use a pyrex jug and tea strainer as a kind of poor man's cafetiere, which does seem to have the benefit of being broadly bombproof.

No idea what you might have been doing, but that seems extreme to have worn out 2.

Yup agreed.

Aeropress makes different tasting coffee to filter coffee.

Yup. If you like the lighter roast coffees with juicy/floral notes etc it's pretty easy to extract them nicely with an aeropress compared to other methods.

Slight tangent:

Does anyone use after market paper filters? There's loads on eBay and i was wondering if they're any good

I have a metal filter but I think the coffee is nicer with the paper filters

Appreciate this thread is a few weeks old however you do not want an Aeropress for when out and about - you want one of these...

That's just a Moka pot with a spout instead of a built-in coffee jug isn't it? I don't like Moka coffee, it's way too bitter for me.

Aeropress is good. I've got a hand grinder that fits neatly inside the aeropress for trips out and about when you need to show people you're a coffee guy - it's a work of art, but it's hard work!

why use an Aeropress over normal filter coffee options?

Making a pot of filter coffee and leaving half of it to stay warm for later is basically a war crime. I'm the only coffee drinker in the house, and the aeropress lets me have good coffee without an extra appliance on the side or wasting/ruining coffee. Cleaning it is about ten seconds: pop the puck into the bin then rinse the bits out.
