So, we let it shoot up to 100,000+ and then… what… just watch the hospitals and hope? Should those of us with hospital appointments in the next month just assume they’ll be cancelled again? Not that mine is important in the grand scheme of things, but many people are waiting, and hoping, for important non Covid treatment, and we’re messing it up for them, aren’t we?

Interesting to see that cases in Scotland appear to be dropping. What are we doing differently or is it just an affect of having a small population?

Sheeesh, all kicking off with covid near us.

Several people at the kids nurseries have tested positive, and a friend (healthy parent in their 30s/40s) that has been double vaccinated has got covid quite bad (!)

Our 2 year old has to stay away from nursery for 10 days, though we've all tested negative.

Not had this many cases near us so far.

Schools. We’ll hopefully have cases dropping in August. That might mean admissions rising right up to September though. And then…

For most of us, this wave will be nothing like the previous ones. Please don’t get stressed Colin. NHS workers, Heads of schools and colleges trying to plan a catch up academic year, and those with increased medical risk need to be remembered this summer though. We should all act with them in mind.

It's finally dropping around me, Lancashire. Scotland is like a small region compared to England, it's moving around England.

The plan to get posties sharing vans again on Monday has been scrapped, which is good news, but no info until after the weekend about how long that delay is and whether they will ask for voluntary van sharing as they did for a short while last year before Alpha really took off.

Very much this round here, schools, youth groups, all going mad. Loads of local cafes and pubs putting out messages that they will be short staffed this weekend and to be kind to their staff.

And a lot saying they expect people to maintain masks and distancing after Monday too.

We're going to provide the nurturing ground for the next variant of concern. With the selective pressure on the virus moving from transmissibility (pressure caused by distancing/masks/isolation etc) to vaccine-resistance (not much of the above, but a sizeable proportion of the population 'vaccinated') I would say it is a safe bet 'we' are going to produce the variant that ****s up the one strategy 'we' are really depending on. With the amount of virus out there, it is odds-on there have already been a number of mutations that would be more vaccine-resistant. But maybe they've died out as the person harboring it has isolated until it has all been taken care of by their immune system. Up the number of non-distanced, non-masked contacts by an exponential amount and the maths is in favour of the UK becoming an international pariah.

The rest of the world can put up with an awful lot, but I suspect this would be too much.

😥

Just by way of controversial straw man....

'We' went rootin, tootin and shootin into Iraq on the pretext (false) that they had WMD (perhaps including biological agents) ready to deploy in 45 minutes.

Would the UN consider a resolution for 'Operation Fly Tipped Sofa Removal'?

The football didn't help either, an early exit for England would have had an effect on numbers. My two sons went to pubs on Sunday, youngest tested positive (as have 7 of his mates) and my eldest (despite having symptoms) was negative but several of his mates are positive. All happened Monday/Tuesday this week.

“In NZ we've always looked to UK for leadership..it's why it just seems so remarkable you're not following even basic public health principles.

Doesn't he realise that we now have one of the biggest bellends in the country as prime minister?

Have you read some of the other tweets from that guy? Saying that thousands of deaths are due to the vaccines. More people dying of that than the actual virus. Or am I missing something?

The summit today that the Prof Baker quote came from is worth a watch. Public Health leaders from Italy, India, US, NZ,Taiwan etc. all baffled and horrified by what we're doing.

Think it was a Mail headline.

Anyone else sense a very last-minute U-turn on Sunday night? It seems like pretty much the whole scientific community and lots of countries are screaming at the government to not make a costly mistake.

PM pushing ahead regardless of worries.

If there's a u-turn it'll be after Monday. Maybe another week or two pretending everything is ok, allowing a load more super spreading events to go on up and down the country. Long enough for people to have forgotten the football, and for Boris & co to dream up an excuse and why this isn't 100% their fault.

Lockdown will be the only option left by then. So we'll have the economic hit of that, straight after the economic hit that's already now guaranteed, caused by half the country being sick at the same time.

Also get ready for some front page non-scandal aimed at Meghan, the EU or Starmer to make sure Boris's voters have something else to think about.

+1. When rail, transport, retail, some entertainment, (except Weatherspoons of course) make up thier own minds that unmasked people are dangerous, you’d have thought the greatest minds in the UK would be chewing at the door of no 10.

Cases are higher than the predicted 50k by the 19th and admissions are soaring with hospitals closing off other care to cope, he has those reasons to use for a U Turn.

Kind of ironic that we’ll have a ‘world-beating’ number of people staying at home self-isolating on freedom day!

Institute where I work is part of a university and they've said that from 19th only a few things will loosen, (still have to mask up & not breach room capacity etc) but they anticipate a rule change in another weeks time

Hospital I work in is maintaining all current rules on masks, social distancing etc until "clearer guidance" is provided that would suggest it's safe to do otherwise. Cases very much on the rise here, all patient visiting cancelled again until further notice.

Pretty much every workplace and business I know of or follow on social media is changing nothing on Monday. Primarily, they are saying, to protect their staff, their customers, and their business.

Which is kind of what the government should be helping them do.

I'm taking this as a sign that maybe the common sense the government were relying on does exist after all.

I kind of get the argument that whenever we ease restrictions there was going to be a bounce, so better to do it in the summer, but the uptick is already huge. I'd like to hear Whitty and the rest swearing on the lives of their kids/partners/favourite pets that they genuinely believe this is the least worst option, and that they aren't saying it because they've been told there's some CCTV footage of them in compromising positions in a Whitehall office.

I need some advice about sensible precautions. Recent events mean my head is full of mince

I am having an outdoors ashes scattering ceremony next weekend. what are sensible precautions to take? there will be around 40 people ( allowed for outdoor funerals IIRC) and the people attending are from all over the UK

I am thinking in terms of asking people not to crowd together - 1 m spacing? 2 m spacing? and to avoid hugs and to make a general covid safty statement at the beginning.

Is sharing of food a no no? We will be having an open air picnic afterwards. Sharing whisky via quaichs I assume is out or will the whisky sterilise things enough?

anything else i should do?

Ta chaps - there is a fair bit of expertise here so hopefully you can help me get my fuzzy head round this

I thought you needed 70% alcohol to be sure of actually killing anything? I'm not saying you can't have 70% whisky, but even cask strength wouldn't be strong enough.

Hi tjagain, I have no expert knowledge but would suggest shot glasses for whisky, at least 1m spacing, food served onto separate plates rather than shared picnic / buffet style. Risk would be comparable to a well run outdoor restaurant, so acceptable to me but others may have different risk appetities.

Whisky's too weak (unless cask strength perhaps) to kill COVID - WHO recommends at least 60%.

Sounds like a good way to celebrate your partner's life, I hope it goes as well as possible for you.

as above, whisky won't sterilise sufficiently to make a communal cup safe, if it's important from a ceremonial perspective can you fill the quaich, and then pour from that into tumblers before drinking from it yourself?

Otherwise outdoors is as safe as you can be, I'd suggest avoiding close contact so 2m ideal, as for food sharing maybe a pump sanitiser gel to be at either end of the buffet so hands are clean before touching utensils, or can you give each family their own tongs? (issues of food cross contamination but assuming no-one's badly coeliac or nut, etc., you're all friends, a bit of coleslaw in the couscous will I'm sure be forgiven)

eg: https://www.amazon.co.uk/20-Black-Plastic-Serving-Tongs/dp/B01FFAFI9C/ref=asc_df_B01FFAFI9C/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=261092506727&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=14577975560330129387&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9045837&hvtargid=pla-465745368653&psc=1

and then masks when coming up to get food - I'd be more worried by people breathing over food than contact via hands in food TBH.

And compulsory helmet wearing, just because it's you 😉

Ta

there will not be a buffett table - its 3 miles from the road and everyone has to walk up. I have asked everyone to bring a picnic and I wanted to ask folk to share with whoever was around them as we all are sitting on a hillside. but I guess thats a bit of a stupid idea.

Shame about the whisky!

Freedom to infect and be infected.

Yesterday evening I was watching another super spreader event on the telly, this time at Silverstone.

I never know how to pronounce these gaelic words, so quaich. Is that the same as a queef?
